Reviews Summary

Osteria Anice Stellato is lauded for its creative Venetian cuisine and charming canal-side setting, offering a refined dining experience. While many praise the innovative dishes and excellent wine selection, some find the portions small for the price and the service can be perceived as formal or lacking warmth by some diners.

"An excellent restaurant slightly off the beaten path. Some find the service stand offish but honestly I find it surprising. As long as you are cordial and friendly as a guest, you will get the best service you will ever want or need.

The restaurant adds creative touches to the dishes which I sometimes don’t love so do take a look at all the listed ingredients and make sure the inventive side doesn’t upset you.

The scallops were wonderful with a nice creamy sauce and texture from the lentils. The octopus was wonderful even though I wasn’t a fan of the chickpea cream. The spaghetti was excellent, full of onions and anchovies, a touch too much sauce to my liking but the taste was wonderful. The pasta / bean soup was nice but too much of the similar taste to my liking. The fish with mushrooms was perfectly cooked and mushrooms did work well here.

A nice option in Venice but do read the menu properly before ordering."

"We have been to the Osteria and I agree with most comments on the quality of service, atmosphere and taste of the dishes. Our experience although has not been of the most rewarding. I can accept the philosophy of the place, also can understand the imbalance of 100 different wines and the short menu, I am prepared to accept the price and surcharge for location and view. What I cannot condone is the portion control. The job of a restaurant is not to be confused with that of a dietician. Pictures to testify that a plate of pasta at €22 with a ragù of mussels - with no mussels as evident from the photo- is not more than 70g of dry weight. Equally a €26 sarde is made of 7 small ones. So I hope the chef and the team understand that customers are ready to accept some compromises but not the lack of consideration of the environment they operate in - in Italian I would call this Lesinare: the intent to reduce the provision for the sole purpose of pretending to be posh. I would hope this review is taken for what it is. Recognition of good intent, feedback for improvement on the execution."

"Beautiful, rustic type restaurant. Sat outside along the canals and had the tasting/sharing plates - 9 small different dishes for 60 EUR. They were all very tasty, diverse and utilizing local ingredients well, but I don’t know that the cost was worth it 100% by virtue of the plates being so small.

However, the staff service was impeccable. One of the waiters, a blond gentleman who was coming to me with the wine pairings for the tasting menu had so much information about each wine. You could also see how passionate he was in talking about the flavors, where they come from, unique things that make the wine standout. I find that so cool and really enjoyed his and the other waiters’ details.

All in all, a good night. Worth checking out, if you’re up for a more expensive meal."

23 Best Restaurants in Venice

When you’ve had about enough of Venetian traditions, Anice Stellato is a good place to come for some different flavors. The gastro-osteria, in the northern Cannaregio district, was among the first restaurants in the city to inject far-flung international touches into Venetian traditions. The name translates to "star anise," but you’ll find ginger, cilantro, hoisin, and many other decidedly non-Venetian ingredients.

In atmospheric northern Cannaregio, Anice Stellato is traditional but chic, with wooden tables and low workshop-style lights. The creative regional cuisine is around two thirds seafood, one third meat. Dishes on the seasonal menu might include potato gnocchi with pumpkin, mushrooms and smoked ham, or hummus with prawns and kale.

About eating and drinking in Venice: a brief guide on how to survive

When I'm ready to spend a bit more still without going bankrupt, with regard to fish my top 6 are definitely Trattoria da Bepi già 54, traditional old style restaurant, Osteria Alla Frasca, with a cosy and warm location, a wonderful owner and an amazingly talented young Sicilian chef, Trattoria da Jonny in Campo delle Gatte in Castello, a family friendly restaurant with a well selected list of wines and dishes that are at the same time beautiful, generous and delicious, Osteria Trefanti, a tiny restaurant in Rio Marin, with two passionate managers, one totally focused on food while the other knowledgeable about wine, Anice Stellato, a wonderful and refined restaurant in Cannaregio where every dish is carefully thought by the chef, and al Co Vino, a small and very intimate slow food bistrot totally focused on ingredients and wine.

The location: Wooden tables, flickering candlelight and an ancient stone column holding up the roof make this place charming and romantic. Perfect for a special occasion dinner or for your last night in Venice. What I ordered: The risotto of the day was expensive (€24 per person for a minimum of two) but it was one of the best dishes I HAVE EVER HAD. Creamy roquefort cheese, the slight tang and sweetness of clementine juice and the earthy spice of golden cumin.

Our first recommendation would be Osteria Anice Stellato, found in the Cannaregio district on a quiet canal it is an intimate but busy restaurant serving traditional Venetian cuisine and exquisite Italian wines. The twenty minute walk from St Mark’s Square ensures that the crowd is comprised primarily of locals and a two course meal for two with wine should cost around €80, a reasonable price given the romantic setting, attentive service and quality fare.

Venezia a Tavola: The Best Restaurants in Venice

Osteria Anice Stellato – Exceptional service and chic, well-plated dishes are hallmarks of this establishment, set on a quiet street off Cannaregio’s main drag. Innovative takes on local cuisine include tandoori fish and, our favorite, the seppie e piselli (cuttlefish and peas). Dishes change by the season, but always focus on products from small, local businesses.

Say buongiorno to the best restaurants in Venice

At first glance there is nothing to distinguish this cosy trattoria from dozens of others around town. It’s not what’s on the compact menu that sets Anice Stellato apart from the rest, however; it’s the flair with which it is executed. Try the delightfully non-greasy fritto misto and you will understand why it is worth the trip to this far-flung corner of town.

Pietra Rossa (from the team behind the now-closed Covino) and Anice Stellato, which are more contemporary, are lovely, too, and book out well in advance. You could certainly get away with never eating pizza in Venice. That said, Birreria La Corte is a solid choice for pizza and beer.
