Rosticceria Gislon

Look for its neon sign to find this cafe, deli, and lunch counter near the Rialto Bridge. Point to what looks good among the trays of dishes like grilled seafood and octopus salad, along with salads, tramezzini, and our favorite: the mozzarella in carrozza. They make this breaded and deep fried grilled cheese sandwich with a few anchovies in the middle, and it’s perfect if you’re looking for a quick lunch or an early dinner.

Rosticceria Gislon (San Marco, Calle de la Bissa, 5424) has been dishing out reasonably priced fast food since the 1930s. On the ground floor you will find the deli and take-away with only a few tables where crowds of locals and tourists alike gobble up mozzarella in carrozza, arancini (rice balls with various fillings), supplì (rice balls with mozzarella). Fritoin del Gondolier (Cannaregio, Campo S.S. Apostoli, 4544) is another great place to buy mozzarella in carrozza for €2,50 as well as a plate of home-made pasta for €5-7 to eat standing outside.

La rosticceria più famosa di Venezia accoglie i visitatori con un banco bello lungo, dove si alternano piatti pronti e fritti della gastronomia (tra cui spiccano le enormi e golosissime mozzarelle in carrozza con l’acciuga o con il prosciutto). Ci troviamo nei pressi del Ponte di Rialto e si mangia non solo velocemente e stando in piedi, ma anche sedendosi e godendosi un momento al tavolo. Dal banco escono infatti, veri e propri piatti di cucina, con tante proposte del giorno.

Rosticceria Gislon is located behind the Rialto Bridge and it is spread over two levels. On the ground floor, there is a counter and you can eat on stools alongside the window or at small tables, while table service is provided upstairs. However, this Rosticceria is well known among locals in Venice because it sells delicious street food, including mozzarella in carrozza – a sort of fried sandwich with oodles of mozzarella cheese and sometimes other ingredients.

The Rosticceria Gislon is one of the most loved rotisseries and a place worth visiting in Venice to eat on a budget. It’s located between St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge and it can get quite busy around lunch time. It’s particularly famous for the Venetian street food called mozzarella in carrozza that you can choose to eat with the anchovy or ham.

Gislon is a real Venice institution, beloved by generations of Venetians. Its origins are a topic of fierce debate, with some claiming 1950 and others swearing they had their first mozzarella in carrozza there before the war. As a rosticceria, they specialise in cooked foods to be taken away, but Gislon has plenty of seating too.

Not unlike a Tavola Calda, a Rosticceria also promises savory delights that cater to those on the move. However, a Rosticceria provides more slow-cooked roasts and ready-made meaty options. Whether you’re hunting for a delectable porchetta sandwich or a quick slice of meat pie, Rosticcerias are made for you.

Check out the bar at Rosticceria Gislon for delicious deep fried cicchetti. The place isn’t in any way fancy but feels very local and authentic. We highly recommend trying the olive ascolane (deep fried green olives stuffed with meat and the mozzarella prosciutto (deep fried mozzarella and ham).

Another one located near Rialto Bridge, this small deli style restaurant serves a selection of fresh food, including pizza, pasta, seafood and meat dishes. Quite simply, there’s something for everyone on the menu, so you won’t be disappointed. Check them out on TripAdvisor.

I love a tavola calda which is like an old fashioned lunch counter. Fresh, hot, homemade style food a la carte. A rosticceria and a tavola calda are almost synonymous, however when I think of a rosticceria, I think of rotisserie chicken, but that's just me.

This is probably one of the most loved places by Venetians, tucked away in a small calle minutes walking to the Rialto Bridge. You can eat right from one of the stools at the counter. If you are lucky you can grab one of the few tables available.

If you would fry even a piece of wood, Rosticceria Gislon is your place. Gislon is crowded by real Venetians. It offers dishes from the tradition, according to the season and the products.

The last time I was here, I found this fabulous Venetian restaurant called Rosticceria Gislon selling mozzarella in carrozza in various forms, one with anchovies, another with prosciutto.
