Burano is the most popular Venetian island, with its rainbow of houses and photogenic fishing boats. To avoid the crowds, do your island-hopping at the end of the day, and take a late-afternoon vaporetto ride and a sunset stroll before heading to Trattoria Da Romano for your dinner reservation. While you can find a ton of excellent seafood like clams, mussels, and shrimp here, the signature dish is the risotto, made with tiny fish from the lagoon called gò, and served tableside.

The walls at this family-run trattoria are adorned with a serious collection of more than 400 works of art given to the restaurant by visiting painters and artists since the 1940s. It first opened in 1900 and years of refined simplicity applied to traditional lagoon cooking make for a menu of risotto di pesce – made with goby fish, stock and vialone nano, a white medium-grain rice – and frittura di Nonna Gigia: a golden crispy plate of calamari, sardines and shrimp finished with a squeeze of lemon.

Located in Burano, once a small poor island where people had to commute to Venice on their tiny row boats.

Da Romano (Via Baldassare Galuppi 221; T: +39 041 730 030) is a favourite of my friend Simon Hopkinson. Owned by the Barbero family for four generations, there’s not a spaghetti strand’s width between the paintings on the walls, given in exchange for dinner by artists who flocked here for the stunning light. Simon said I had to have the fish risotto.

Next, Tony leaves the main islands of Venice to visit colorful Burano. He is joined by an originally American, now Venetian food writer for several meals, including one at Trattoria da Romano. This restaurant dates back to the 1800s and has been run by five subsequent generations – they make what they make, and they make it well.

If you want to try some truly EXQUISITE gò (or any seafood whatsoever, for that matter), head to Trattoria da Romano. This restaurant was made famous when Anthony Bourdain visited, but that guy knew his stuff and although the food is pricey, you can’t fault it.

My favourite restaurant on the island of Burano is called ‘Da Romano’. It is a traditional trattoria, that has recently celebrated a century of what the Italians call ‘attivita’ and we would call ‘being in business’. The restaurant is warm and welcoming.

Between Burano and Murano, we spent most of our time wandering colourful Burano and worked up an appetite. After some research, we went for this lovely spot and have zero regrets!. It’s a family run restaurant lined with stunning paintings.
