Near Piazza delle Erbe – once the city’s Roman forum – down a narrow alley, the centuries-old Bottega del Vino is a temple for wine lovers. You could be sipping wine at the marble-topped bar next to local winemakers or sitting down to savour a meal (try the gallina in agrodolce, a sweet-and-sour chicken salad) with something from the 18,000-bottle cellar. Wine export consultant Costanza Maag says: ‘It’s a true meeting place for locals and tourists, all drawn in by the warm atmosphere.’ You can worship wine here with a glass for €4, or a bottle for up to €22,000.

At Antica Bottega del Vino, on the Via Scudo di Francia, just off Via Mazzini, the wine is the main attraction. It’s a beautiful restaurant, hundreds of years old, with stained-glass windows and a wine cellar about three times the size of the restaurant — the list looks like an old-school telephone directory. It serves excellent food — such as Amarone wine risotto — but it’s special because of its Coravin wine system, which uses argon gas and a needle to extract wine from bottles without the need to uncork them.

Risotto Amarone is the most popular risotto in Verona, probably because it was made here first, so you know it is going to be the best in Italy. And while it is very much street food nowadays, to get the absolute best dish, you have to go to Antica Bottega Del Vino on Via Scudo di Francia. This centuries-old spot is a mix of a wine bar, restaurant, and delicatessen, and though it will cost a little more, one bite of the rich and deeply flavorful dish and you won't mind the extra cost.

For our third breakfast we chose the historical osteria Antica Bottega del Vino, where I strongly suggest to go for either a nibble or a proper traditional meal. Although in the centre, it was empty of tourists and crowded with elderly locals (which is always a good sign!) and groups of friends. The wooden interiors, the elegant writings engraved on the wooden beams and the super inviting wine list and cicheti should make good reasons enough for a quick break.

It's been years since I've been, but I just loved the Bottega del Vino (not right by the arena, but not very far away). Starting strong with shredded horse meat and sweet and sour chicken salad, the excellent Amarone risotto continues, along with plenty of fresh pasta, filled and unfilled.

If the health inspectors of Verona will permit, I would like my ashes scattered on the floor of the Antica Bottega del Vino — the best wine bar in the world. Forget Juliet's balcony, with all its lovelorn graffiti, and head to this gem tucked away on a tiny alley called Via Scudo di Francia just off the Piazza del Erbe. It's a place of pilgrimage for the true lover of wine.
