What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
High Spirits offers an extraordinary dining experience with exceptional food and warm hospitality, making it a highlight for many visitors. Guests rave about the fresh, delicious, and meticulously prepared dishes, especially the omakase selections. While the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff are universally praised, some diners noted that the variety of food offered might be limited given it's an izakaya.
"One of the absolute best experiences 2 Aussies could ask for in Japan! We were recommended this place by a friend, and we weren’t disappointed. We ordered the chicken karaage, chicken thighs, roasted pork with romesco sauce, braised pork ribs and matcha crème brûlée. We also ordered the special of udo tempura (a Japanese type of bitter asparagus)… every single item was oishii! Tsuyoshi balanced cooking and entertaining perfectly; the most hospitable chef we’ve ever met. His English may even be better than his drinking ability… maybe…
We loved High Spirits and encourage any traveller (or local) to enjoy a meal or drink served by Tsuyoshi and his wife.

"The culinary experience and warm hospitality were perfectly balanced.
I absolutely loved the high spirits and would highly recommend it to any visitor and local.
I ordered the chef's choice, and every dish that came out truly impressed me.
It was all incredibly fresh and unbelievably delicious!!!
Be sure to order some sake and ask for his recommendations; he's excellent at pairing drinks with his dishes.
Perfect harmony of food and hospitality. Chef Tsuyopon is the kindest chef I've ever met."

"Foods are exceptional, especially the white truffle sashimi and the Japanese oyster hotpot.
Situated in a quiet area, like a hidden gem. English menu available and staff are very nice! Definitely to visit!
Google map location maybe little bit confusing where you may see the result of a ramen shop but it’s actually the same address. Hope you manage to find this restaurant :)"

Gluten Free in Kawaguchiko, Japan
High Spirits was a 10 minute walk away from the Ryokan that I was staying at, tucked up a long drive way next to another restaurant - of which that had hilarious competitive signing with. This isn't a 100% gluten free restaurant!. But the chef had a great understanding of Coeliac disease - and a lot of their food was gluten free anyway, including the pancake with salmon and cream cheese!.
