What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Anagomeshi Ueno is celebrated for its legendary anagomeshi, featuring charcoal-grilled conger eel with a unique smoky flavor and savory sauce over rice. Diners praise the authentic, traditional atmosphere and the nuanced taste of the focused menu. While many find the meal delicious and satisfying, some note the eel can be slightly dry or less fatty than unagi, and the prices are on the higher side.
"Hugely popular anago restaurant, and justifiably so. Smokey flavour with a slightly chewy texture - very tasty. Beautiful old building, with wonderful old furniture pieces."

"Visited Anagomeshi Ueno on a quiet Tuesday around 4 pm. It wasn't busy, so I was seated right away. I ordered the medium-sized set meal, which came with pickles and miso soup. The food came out quickly and was nicely presented. Overall, the taste was quite delicious, though I found the anago a bit dry, which kept me from giving it a full 5 stars. Still, it was a satisfying experience and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good anago meal."

"A great place to try another Hiroshima favorite, conger eel. However, this place is very popular, so be prepared to wait at least 30min. If you want to avoid the line, you can always skip it if you get take-out.
Crowd Size: Very High (35min wait)
Payment Method: Credit Card"

Tanakichi, who was originally a merchant in Miyajima, opened a tea store at Miyajima-guchi, where "Anago-meshi" was born. The "Anago-meshi" has become a specialty of Miyajima and Hiroshima, with different tastes and recipes, but "Ueno" has kept the taste inherited from Tanakichi.
