Although I was initially confused to see oysters used for a stout rather than something like a citrusy lager or ale to complement their brininess, upon trying the beer, I understood why the brewery went with a stout instead. In Japan, oysters are sometimes referred to as “the milk of the sea,” and mixing that salty, creamy flavor with a stout resulted in a decent dark beer. While it wasn’t the revelation of Sakurao’s botanical-rich bottle, this stout balanced its rich, coffee-like flavor with a mild scent of brine.

As the name suggests, this microbrewery is on Miyajima Island, which is already a win as you get to journey out to the beautiful island location. The brewery is above a restaurant, meaning you can pair craft beers with a selection of tasty cuisine. There are 16 beers produced in total, including Miyajima Weizen (white beer), Misen Dragon IPA, Hiroshima Lemon Ale, and Oyster Stout.

The cutest Miyajima themed ice-creams are sold at a cafe called Miyajima Umaimono-kan. The wafers and candy decorations are all Miyajima themed (little deer and leaves etc, it’s so cute! You can see a picture here.) Please note that this shop takes cash only and is only open from midday – 4pm daily.

Miyajima Cola is made at the Miyajima Brewery on the island. You'll find cans of the with a deer on it, at various stalls throughout the island. There is also a organic juice garden off the main shopping street where you can sample the breweries various soft drinks while gazing out onto the water.

If you’re on the lookout for beer, you’ll also spot the alcohol vending machines, places selling take-out draft beer cups and others yet again selling bottled Miyajima beer. Seems like everywhere you go, there is a cold beer ready and waiting.

Since Miyajima is surrounded by water, you can bet its seafood is great. One of the island specialties is oyster!. As you take the ferry into the island from mainland Hiroshima, you can see the oyster farms floating in the middle of the bay.

Great food and great service! Second time here and I ordered the oyster fritters both times. SO good!!! This time I also ordered the grilled salmon with garlic butter. It was delicious!!

Once you've had your fill of eating oysters, it's time to try drinking oysters at MIYAJIMA BREWERY, a beer stand with its own brewery, established in 2017.
