Reviews Summary

Tamagoya is praised for its unique and affordable Tamagake Gohan, with many appreciating the free refills of rice and eggs. Its convenient location opposite Himeji Castle is a major draw. However, some diners found the menu limited, and a few noted that the food could be served warmer, with one reviewer also mentioning cleanliness concerns.

"Very tasty conger eel, nicely seasoned, with rice and fried egg pancake. We also tried a small beef bowl which was great too.
The staff was friendly and the food was prepared quite quickly.
Definitely recommended for a cost efficient meal after visiting the castle."

"The shop is directly opposite Himeji Castle. You can have lunch here and proceed to visit the castle.
It's a small eatery occupying about 5 to 6 tables. Service is quick once you place your order. Rice and eggs are free flow. The egg is delicious, and it doesn't have the eggy smell and taste. It's just tastes very smooth on its own. Highly recommended."

peter liew

"Decent spot for a quick bite after visiting the castle. I wish the food was more warm. Got the roasted chicken dish and the food tasted ok, except for the fact that everything was slightly cold. Kind of jarring going from warm rice to cold (steamed) egg.

Probably wouldn't come here again, and I can't really recommend this spot either."

My Visit to Japan’s Himeji and its Castle

I heard about a restaurant called Tamagoya that serves raw eggs on rice — it’s a local specialty and because I love eggs, that was where I was headed. I ordered the Tamakake-Meshi that comes with a bowl of rice and raw eggs (with free refills), miso soup, seaweed and pickles for JP ¥580~US$5.5; and an extra side of ikura (salmon eggs) for JP ¥350~US$3. The meal was pretty damn good, and I’d have it everyday if I could get eggs as fresh as theirs.

What to Eat in Himeji | Japan Travel by NAVITIME

A raw egg cracked open and poured over a bowl of rice might be one of the simplest dishes in Japanese cuisine, yet tamago kake gohan, often abbreviated to TKG, is a surprisingly delicious and a popular breakfast dish among Japanese people. To be fair, a splash of soy sauce is also usually added to the mix, to give it a little bit of flavour. While some might question the safety of eating eggs raw, it is considered perfectly safe in Japan.
