What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Cafe is highly praised for its exceptional coffee, often called the best in Japan, and delicious, unique sandwiches. The charming vintage atmosphere and friendly, English-speaking staff make it a welcoming spot for international visitors. While most reviews are glowing, one diner noted a passive-aggressive remark from staff and a burnt croissant.
"Great little breakfast spot! I usually don’t drink flavored lattes but the gingerbread latte was amazing and not too sweet. The pulled pork sandwich was absolutely delicious and they had plenty of desserts or pastries that you could order to go with your coffee. Good spot if you want some well made coffee and breakfast"

"What a quaint little cafe. There was a line out the door when I arrived but good things come to those who wait. I got a breakfast sandwich and a cinnamon latte and both were delicious. The staff speaks English and the menus were in English as well. Very visitor friendly."

"We visited spring of this year and I’ve only just gotten round to this review. We were greeted with a reserved politeness bordering on sterile, which didn’t bother me too much initially. However, as we were placing our breakfast orders, my elderly father decided to abstain, as he wasn’t feeling too good. The woman made a passive aggressive remark, reminding us that this was a “food place”, which I felt was unneeded. Three of us were already dining and we would’ve still been seated at the table for four, given that that was the only table free when we arrived. Would they have wanted to keep the one seat empty to put a stranger with us had it been extremely busy? On this occasion, it was quite sedate, so I have to wonder why that comment was made if not to attempt to put us in our place.
The breakfast food was standard. The bagel with cream cheese was as you would expect—nothing out of the ordinary. The croissant, on the other hand, was unfortunately burnt. As the breakfast was nothing to write home about, I would not return due to the owner’s unwelcoming demeanour."

Kanazawa | Brian's Coffee Spot
I did really well when I visited Kanazawa as part of the first of this year’s two Japanese trips. I’d chosen my hotel largely for its proximity to the castle (which I could see from my window), little realising that it was surrounded by a clutch of excellent coffee shops, one of which, Curio Espresso and Vintage Design, was visible from the other side of the hotel. I was originally put on to Curio by Happy Cow, a site for finding vegetarian and vegan restaurants, which resulted in my heading to Curio for breakfast on my second day in Kanazawa.

Speaking of Seattle, Curio owner Yuko Otoku and her husband Sol Gayago were former residents of this well-known coffee city in America before relocating to Kanazawa in 2014, making Curio one of the first of the new wave of coffee shops here. Many overseas visitors enjoy Curio as a place where they can order in English, and Yuko and Sol are more than happy to accept customized orders for the drinks they serve. Curio is conveniently located in a renovated machiya house in Yasue-cho along the Kanazawa Omotesando street, close to Omicho Market.

This café, run by a cheerful and friendly couple, specializes in delicious latte made in Seattle. They loved the atmosphere of meeting and interacting with people of different generations, so he decided to create such a “place”.

First we stopped by Curio Espresso for some coffee to start the day. I tried their iced cinnamon latte here and it was very nice. I prefer it over the typical pumpkin spiced latte.
