What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Karuizawa Kawakamian Honten is celebrated for its exceptional soba noodles and the popular Deluxe Tempura Soba. Diners consistently praise the restaurant's stylish, cozy atmosphere, often compared to a ski lodge. While many rave about the food and ambiance, some reviews mention long wait times, and one negative experience with service highlights the importance of polite communication.
"It was a really great experience. We went here because we noticed the long line 🤭 Soba was great, i prefer the cold one because there’s a tendency for the noodles to get soggy in the soup over time. We also ordered sides like the duck and eggplant with mochi. Both were good! Would go back and line up anytime!"

"For a soba-first place, it was lacking. The texture was hard and had almost no flavor. That being said, everything else we had here was really good - pork tongue, shrimp lotus root, beef lotus root, grilled chicken, and shiitake mushrooms. Service was great, but I think it’s only because we visited off-season, so your mileage may vary. Prices were reasonable for the area (you’d pay way more for less in any of Japan’s major cities."
Mike Burbie
"We tried two of their standout dishes—the Deluxe Tempura Soba and the Kamo Seiro (Duck Dipping Soba).
The tempura soba came with a hot, flavorful broth and perfectly crispy shrimp and vegetable tempura. The Kamo Seiro featured cold soba with a rich duck dipping sauce, packed with tender duck slices and green onion. Both were delicious and beautifully prepared.
It’s no surprise the restaurant is packed with both locals and tourists all day and it’s located at the main old street. Definitely a must-visit spot for soba lovers in Karuizawa."
