Maruyama Coffee

Located in Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku County Nagano Prefecture, this is the head shop for Maruyama Coffee, a specialty coffee shop that is popular even in Tokyo and Kanagawa. The shop is an old pension based in a quiet area of vacation homes that is enveloped by nature, and in the remodeled interior guests can enjoy high quality coffee that has been purchased all over the world via the shop’s proprietary route. Their coffee has a strong fragrance and a smooth finish on the palate, and is loved not only by local regulars but tourists as well.

Maruyama is simply one of the highest quality coffee shops on this list. Their care and consideration over each cup of espresso, every drip coffee shows in their presentation and attitude. This cafe has great relationships with the farmers who grow the beans (something they aren’t all that shy about telling you), and offers one of the widest, if not the widest, selections of beans and roasts for you to taste and take home.

MARUYAMA Coffee, originating in Karuizawa, uses high-quality coffee beans personally selected and evaluated by the owner, Kentaro Maruyama. The shop boasts skilled baristas who have undergone training and competition in Japanese and international coffee competitions, creating unique, exceptionally flavorful coffees. MARUYAMA Coffee has gained widespread love from coffee enthusiasts in Japan and around the world.

This extremely popular coffee shop “Maruyama Coffee” was born in Karuizawa, and has expanded to the Kanto and Koshinetsu region, and has a shop overseas. The owner visits other countries as a buyer of coffee beans and has special skills to roast. He has also taken part in some barista championships to compete, and still tries to make an effort in making good coffees!

A vegan-friendly restaurant conveniently located inside Shinano Railway’s Karuizawa Station is Primo fito. The Italian diner opened in 2021 has a vegan menu you can enjoy without communicating your dietary requirements. The company’s main restaurant, Trattoria Primo (トラットリア プリモ 本店), close to Old Karuizawa Ginza Street, is a stylish restaurant buried in the greens.

Before heading out to your next adventure pick up a Cup of Jo at Maruyama Coffee shop. Established since 1991 they support small coffee growers all over the world and have a lovely collection of great coffee that you won’t find anywhere else. They also offer different coffee process; hand-drip, espresso machine and steampunk.

For a perfect coffee to finish off your meal, try the local experts, Maruyama Coffee Café and Books. They keep it simple with just coffee and cake, but also have books for you to peruse and buy. They also do a roaring trade on weekend mornings with their many seats outside in the sun.

Maruyama Coffee is a specialty coffee shop founded in Karuizawa. Their HARUNIRE Terrace store offers around thirty to forty types of coffee all year round. You can either purchase coffee beans to enjoy at home or relax with a freshly brewed cup of coffee on the terrace.

Maruyama Coffee was next on my itinerary, and it was a great place to take a short break. There'll definitely be a cuppa for all coffee drinkers as the shop offers a large selection of beans from the coffee producing regions in the world.
