Diners consistently praise the memorable flavors, creative dishes like the mackerel sandwich, and the respectful treatment of seasonal produce. While the menu is in Japanese, the staff are accommodating, making it a highly recommended, albeit somewhat pricey, destination for an immersive culinary journey.
"The best meal we had in Japan. Amazing charcoal grilled eel, sea bream karaage, among others and every dish had delicious and unique accompanying sauces/ spices. Extremely hospitable service to non-Japanese too. Definitely recommend for an authentic experience. Thank you for making our last night in Kyoto so memorable!"

"I’m sorry, but this place deserves a way higher rating. This is was one of the most incredible dinners I had in Japan. The whole menu was in Japanese (which I liked), but our chef was very accommodating and helpful. Couldn’t recommend Gion Rohan more highly. Great value for money based on the experience you get! A must in Kyoto"

"This was hands down our most memorable meal of our two week Japan trip. Reservations are necessary, so make sure you call ahead.
The restaurant is a small, upscale izakaya, where you sit at the bar and you receive a handwritten menu (Japanese only!) with whatever they have market fresh that day. We decided to try as many things as we could; the chef speaks a little bit of English and is friendly and helpful, he helped us choose dishes that were most representative of his restaurant.
Dishes take creative twists on modern classics with simplicity and respect for ingredients. For me, the highlight of the meal was the crispy unagi, made with a fresh sichuan peppercorn, sake and soy sauce reduction for a very subtle kick. I will definitely visit this place again when I am back in Kyoto.
Price was about 10k¥ per person for 6 dishes and a few beers each."

This popular Japanese restaurant is tucked away on Nawate Dori, east of Shijo Bridge.Their casual a la carte authentic Japanese cuisine made in the style of famous restaurant "Wakuden" is a popular way to enjoy their dishes. The menu consists of about 30 items with ingredients that rotate seasonally, such as wild mountain vegetables in the spring, ayu in the summer, matsutake mushrooms in the fall, and fugu (puffer fish) in the winter, but you'll definitely want to try their famous "saba (mackerel) sandwich" when you visit. While the combination of vinegared mackerel with browned toast might seem odd, once you've taken a bite you're sure to fall in love with the beautiful harmony of flavors. ★Gion RohanAddress: 232 Nijuikkencho, Yamatoojidori, Shijo Agaru, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto-shi, KyotoPhone: 075-533-7665Hours: 17:00-22:30Budget: 10,000-14,999 yenClosed: Sundays
