Reviews Summary

Temariya is highly praised for its exceptional Baumkuchen, often called the best in the world, with a unique gluten-free option that appeals to many. Diners love the moist texture, elegant sweetness, and comforting aroma. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, one reviewer found a particular cake a bit too sweet for their liking.

"This is the best Baumkuchen in the world! I don’t know what kind of magic they use to bake this, but it’s incredible. 💓 It’s so good that we took 3 cakes back home with us to Germany 😄 Our friends and family love it, too!

As soon as you approach the shop, it starts smelling delicious. The cakes have an elegant sweetness and a warm, buttery flavour softness. I love the fluffy as well as the chewy texture - you can taste the high quality ingredients and perfected preparation in all of them, even the cookies. ✨The price is fair for this world-class Baumkuchen. Service was also very friendly! 🙇‍♀️

And on top, everything is gluten-free as they only use riceflour, also even suitable for celiacs!"

Eva Heyer

"Check out the Baumkuchen being baked right at the shop. The staff told us it takes about 1 hour to bake one set of whole cakes, with all those delicate layers. You'd be lured into the shop by the sweet aroma of the cake. Lots of flavours to choose from."

Josh Josh

"Amazingly good! 100% gluten free (rice flour), nice people and a cute place.
Couldn't believe how good it was!"

Temari-ya is bakery that produces “Shinshu baumkuchen” – which sounds like a regional dish despite actually being a German traditional cake baked on a spit. For whatever reason, baumkuchen is extremely popular in Japan and this shop in the Nakamachi district is the go-to place for locals who crave this high end, lightly sweetened, moist cake. Expect to pay between ¥800-¥2000, depending on how big of a sweet tooth you have.
