Reviews Summary

Nakatanidou is celebrated for its exceptionally soft and delicious yomogi mochi, a must-try treat in Nara. While the high-speed mochi pounding demonstration is a major draw and entertaining, it can get very crowded. The mochi itself is praised for its perfect texture and balanced sweetness, making it a highly recommended stop for visitors.

"Freshly made mochi that is not too sweet. It was just nice! Perfect. The mochi was tender, with a succulent and malleable texture.

There was no queue and they served customers quite quickly. Cash only.

A must-go if you are visiting Nara. It’s a short walk from the Kintetsu Nara train station.

Highly recommended! Thumbs up!"

"Without doubt, the best mochi I’ve ever had in my life. We didn’t catch the famous pounding performance, but we did see one of the staff making them by hand, and being able to eat them warm, freshly prepared, was incredible. Soft, delicate, almost melting in your mouth, with a subtle nutty powder on the outside – nothing like the packaged mochis you find elsewhere. Absolutely worth trying if you’re in Nara, highly recommended."

Jorge Risueño

"Although very touristy, this place is worth a stop, or even a trip to visit. I usually don’t like super “touristy” places, but the mochi show actually was fun to watch. Crowds build up fairly quickly, but the mochi pounding happens fairly regularly, so we were able to watch two. Finally, the mochi itself is a 10/10. It’s so fresh and still warm. Again, we got seconds. Worth a stop and even a side trip to visit!"

If you’ve at all been exposed to Japanese tourism videos it’s likely you’ve seen the famous shopfront of Nakatanidou, or more importantly the image of two men hard at work pounding at a large ball of glutinous rice cake with terrifying coordination. It’s no surprise that you’ll often find a crowd of tourists at the shopfront of Nakatanidou with their phones and cameras out, keen to film the entertaining demonstration. Otherwise, this shop sells yomogimochi for ¥150 (US$1.35) apiece.

Granted, it is pretty fun to watch people pound the CRAP out of mochi, especially at the speed they do it, but unless you line up early to watch, you likely won’t get a good view.
