What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
HONGŪ CAFE offers a unique dining experience with its tranquil forest setting and historic ambiance within a renovated 300-year-old house. While many praise the relaxing atmosphere and unique Japanese desserts like Matcha Pudding, some reviews mention that the quality has declined from previous visits, citing bland food and less-than-friendly service. Despite mixed reviews on food, the setting remains a strong draw for a peaceful break.
"We enjoyed our meal here. The location was convenient for us since we were short on time. The service was very kind and quick and we both enjoyed our lunch. My favorite part of the restaurant was the atmosphere it was clean and nicely decorated even the women’s bathroom had added extra touches of decor that I appreciated."

"Japanese local style. Cozy but not so friendly. Maybe they are too busy. They provide an English menu.
I ordered Matcha latte and hot chocolate. They both are a bit too sweet for me. The matcha they use is not that high quality. Nothing special. Light smell and no after taste.
It’s a good place to just sit and relax.

"Matcha pudding was delicious. Paired with matcha latte, not too sweet, loved it. The ambience is very relaxing with good background music. It very close to shinkyo station and great place to take a break after hike to all the shrines"

Hongu Cafe is a small cafe near Shinkyo Bridge, and I’m so glad we accidentally stumbled upon it. Desperate for some coffee, we entered this traditional cafe and were blown away by the interior. We were asked to take off our shoes and put on some Japanese slippers before we were guided to our table.
