Nestled in the enchanting Fairy Tale Crossroads of Sakaimachi Shopping Street stands the prominent tower-like structure of Otaru's well-known dessert and souvenir haven, the LeTAO Main Store. The ground floor offers an array of signature items such as the iconic double-layered cheesecake, cheese-filled cookies, and black tea chocolate cookies. Visitors can also explore exclusive items unique to this flagship store, and international tourists can take advantage of duty-free privileges.

The beautiful building with a tower that stands at the fairy tale intersection is Otaru’s representative confectionery store, Rutao Honten. The name of the store, LeTAO, is an unusual combination of the first letter of “La Tour Amitie Otaru,” which means “Dear Otaru’s Tower” in French, and “Lutao,” which means Otaru from the opposite side. If you ask any cake lover what they want to eat in Otaru, they will no doubt say Lutao’s cheesecake “Deubre Fromage”.

After some hard work creating your glass masterpiece, its time to have a little bite to eat in one of Sakaimachi’s delicious sweet shops, the most famous being LeTAO. LeTAO boasts an impressive range of over 50 kinds of cakes and sweets, specializing in the addictive Fromage. Enthusiastic staff will happily let you try before you buy, and LeTAO also conveniently packs and delivers sweets right to your door.

LeTao is now a worldwide brand that is well known for its “northern sweets,” but its iconic dessert is the double fromage cheesecake. It is the perfect balance of a creamy no-bake top layer coupled with a rich and tasty baked cheesecake base. LeTao has stores around Asia, but everything tastes the best from its place of origin, so definitely check out the first and main LeTao store on Sakaimachi Street!

As a renowned dessert shop in Hokkaido hailed as “the legend of the dessert industry,” the LeTAO main store consists of three floors. The first floor serves as the retail area, offering tasting services so that customers can select and sample desserts prior to making a purchase. The second floor is the dining area, which is typically teeming with people waiting in line.

Finally, you can’t visit Otaru without checking out Otaru’s representative pastry brand: LeTAO (ルタオ). Its unique name―pronounced ru-ta-o in Japanese―is derived from Otaru’s syllables said backwards. Established in 1998 in Otaru, LeTAO has gained widespread acclaim for its exquisite confectioneries, particularly its signature Double Fromage cheesecake (ドゥーブルフロマージュ).

Desserts are also a must-try when in Otaru, including the world-famous LeTAO cheesecakes that originated in this very city. Numerous branches are spread out all over the city where you can try cheesecakes, chocolates, soft serve ice creams and more. Speaking of ice cream, the 8-layer rainbow ice cream is also a must-try in Otaru.

A 5-minute walk from Minami-Otaru Station on JR Hakodate Main Line area Called area, Opposite the Otaru Music Box. You can taste Lutau's classic cheesecake "Doble Fromage".

The main location of a Western confectionary shop from Otaru, Hokkaido. The easily identifiable exterior is modeled after a cute, old European tower. The shop's signature item is its Double Fromage, a melt-in-your mouth cheesecake made with top quality ingredients and consisting of a baked and non-baked layer.

There are many of the world-famous LeTAO confectionery shops too. The western dessert shop has a wide range of northern sweets such as the small bite-sized royale montagne chocolate powdered with cocoa, double fromage for cheese lovers, or the melt-in-your-mouth Niagara Chocolat Blanc Frais (has alcohol).

When we went, we had 90(?!) groups queueing in front of us for the Cafe so we didn’t bother. Instead we went the cheaper route of buying takeouts and eating at the outdoor tables in LeTAO Dani nearby (not sure if this is actually allowed, but we bought a lot of stuffs from Dani too and nobody told us off)

We made a highly-anticipated stop at LeTAO (ルタオ) in Otaru for their famous cheesecakes. I heard all about the melt-in-your-mouth creamy cheesecakes of LeTAO from friends who’d gone ahead, and I’m glad to say it didn’t disappoint. 7-16 Sakaimachi, Otaru City, Hokkaido, 047-0027

LeTao is a famous French pastry brand established in Otaru since 1996, with overseas operations worldwide, including Canada, Australia and Singapore. The main shop is located on the popular Sakaimachi Street pictured above. However, the store was already closed when we found it.

We then headed to LeTao which is a confectionery company founded in Otaru. Although I don’t have photographs of the interior (I was busy trying samples :p), it is definitely a must visit. We wanted to have desserts at the cafe on the second level but the queue was insane.

In this case, most of its products are to buy and enjoy later when you return to the hotel or your country. However, LeTAO is the place that you must visit to sin Gluttony at the moment. They have a great variety of delicious cakes you can accompany with coffee.

There are five shops in the Otaru Sakaimachi-dori area alone. Every store sells their own limited-edition products, so you’ll want to visit all of them if you have a sweet tooth. Savor each unique flavor made with Hokkaido ingredients!

Because Otaru is the birthplace of LeTao, some original sweets can be only found here. I tried their cheesecake and cheese biscuits, they all tasted good!!. Especially the cheesecake was so creamy and delicious!.

LeTao (ルタオ) is a popular confectionery store in Otaru city, and has been established since 1998. Kotobuki Spirits Co. Ltd. (寿スピリッツ株式会社), a famous confectionery company in Tottori prefecture, is a parent company.

My favorite shop here was LeTAO, because they were giving amazing free samples of cheese cake and cookies here. Shops on this street close around 7pm, so be sure to come early so you can see everything.

Follow your nose—and the trail of free samples—to LeTAO, Otaru’s most renowned local confectionery. The cheesecakes are made with Hokkaido’s finest dairy products, and they taste just like happiness.

After wandering around the nearby glass shops, I stopped at LeTao, which is probably the most famous cafe in the town. The cheesecake was definitely worth every yen, no matter how small the piece.
