What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Alter Ego offers a highly praised fine dining experience with innovative Italian-Japanese fusion cuisine. Diners rave about the signature tajarin pasta, exceptional Wagyu, and attentive service, including the unique knife selection. While generally well-received, some find the pricing to be on the higher side, and occasionally, dishes may lack a punch of flavor for some palates.
"Amazing dining experience and would for sure come back. Made booking via TableCheck for 8pm but the restaurant was able to accommodate our early arrival. First floor is all counter-seat and we sat in a private room on the second floor.
We did a la carte for food and wine pairing (¥14,000 per person) for six glass of wines. It was well worth it and would highly recommend. Wines are mainly from Italy.
Loved the wine pairing for Prosciutto and Pear & Mozzarella. Essentially, every dish is nicely done with something to remember."

"We had the course meal 15,000¥ pp and the food and service was amazing (not all pictures are featured below). We sat at the counter so the chefs were right in front of us however we did not get a view of the actual cooking. For the wagyu they let us choose our knife which was a lovely touch. They also had 5 options for dessert. It was a shame that they ran out of beer however it was an enjoyable night."

"FANTASTIC! The Wagyu without a doubt was the best I have ever tasted and the desert. The white wine matched perfectly."

In Tokyo's Culinary Scene, a Renewed Wave of Italian-Japanese Fusion
There are about 1,500 Italian restaurants in Tokyo, but Alter Ego is one of the most legendary. Here the tajarin pasta is a tangle of delicately thin noodles bathed in a silky butter sauce; the minced duck is grilled on a skewer like a tsukune meatball and drizzled with a balsamic glaze. When Alter Ego opened in 2019, its popularity prompted the world of Japanese fine dining to more seriously consider the appeal of Italian fusion, which had until then been mostly the realm of chain eateries.

The Tokyo Pizza Restaurant That Ranks Among the World's Best
This may have been because The Pizza Bar on 38th was temporarily serving a special combined menu with Tokuyoshi, the namesake of Chef Yoji Tokuyoshi, who runs Alter Ego, another one-star Michelin restaurant in Central Tokyo. For three days in October, this limited-time omakase (chef-curated) tasting menu allowed guests to dine on the cuisine of two Michelin chefs for the price of one.
