What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Butagumi is highly praised for its exceptional tonkatsu, featuring a vast selection of premium pork cuts and a delightful crispy texture. Diners also rave about the charming traditional Japanese house setting and impeccable service, making it a must-visit for many. While generally well-loved, some guests note that the higher-end pork options come at a premium price.
"Butagumi in Roppongi area of Tokyo. This place has been written about by many raving bloggers. Which was the reason I was a bit skeptical as most of the blogs were in english and therefore it might have been another good but 'gaijin' tourist attraction. I was so wrong! This place is AMaAzing! I had my lunch twice in the same sitting as it was that good and my bill was just $70!!!! Just look at that menu. There are 30 varieties of pork! For my first lunch I tried the Kinton pork, oMG! It was probably one of the most flavorful pork I had this year! My second lunch I wanted to test this much talked about Mangalista hungarian pork and it was a bit of a let down after all the things I have read about it. The texture is more meaty than fatty. I am so going back to try the other varieties."

"What can I say, this place was absolutely delicious! It had the thickest tonkatsu loin I had ever eaten. The restaurant is quite charming inside an old house. This place has been featured in many blogs, so it's wise to book a reservation ahead of time or you can try to call in to find a table. I usually try not to go to places that are heavily influenced by influencers, I honestly don't think they need influencers help at all. In fact, normally it's a turn off. But in this case, I'm happy that I went. I'll just let the pictures speak for itself."

"This place is truly amazing! We have tried many Tonkatsu and this is by far the best one we’ve had. The staff is support friendly and the atmosphere is great. I’ve made it tradition to eat here every time I visit Japan. I’ve taken different people and they have all loved it. Highly recommend"

Where to eat in Tokyo? A selection of my favorite restaurants
Another delicious tonkatsu restaurant I would recommend is Butagami in Nishiazabu. It is more expensive than the previous suggestion, but you get to choose from a big variety of different cuts of pork (according to the amount of fat and the origin of the meat from different prefectures of Japan). Reservations are highly recommended, as there are not many tables in this small restaurant, but the staff are friendly and efficient, the menus are all available in English.

There’s a variety of premium pork on the menu, with details about the origin of the meat as well as explanations of the different cuts to help guests choose based on their preference. We tried two different cuts – juicy sirloin and fatty pork belly, both deep-fried in panko breadcrumbs.

While tonkatsu is the star at Butagumi, it is not the only reason why you should dine here. The feel of taking off your shoes, and stepping into a typical Japanese wooden booth, having a handbell to ring for service, a table lined with floral-printed China, and a fuss-free Japanese menu (with English option available)—all these little touches complete the experience of dining in a true blue ryotei.
