Offering up high-end Mediterranean cuisine in an incredibly stylish setting, Cicada's resortlike atmosphere feels a world away from Omotesando's busy shopping streets. In the warmer months, the outdoor patio is especially relaxing. The menu ranges from Spanish tapas and Middle Eastern mezze to hearty grilled meats and seafood.

Cicada, a longtime Food File favorite, recently upped and moved. Its new premises in Omotesando, a block back from Aoyama-dori, are larger and sleeker but the pan-Mediterranean menu remains much the same — apart from the sherry list, which sadly has been whittled back to just a single manzanilla. On the plus side, there is plenty of alfresco seating, and an outside bar that will be dispensing ales and IPAs from the TY Harbor Brewery, just as soon as spring temperatures arrive.

The Roastery by Nozy Coffee is the outcome of the collaboration between the owner of Nozy Coffee, Mr. Nojiro and TY Harbor (which owns restaurants and cafes around Tokyo such as Ivy Place, CICADA and Breadworks among others). Deeply inspired by the Third Wave Coffee movement, where coffee is treated as an artisanal ingredient, coffee beans brought from around the world are roasted right there in the Cat Street shop. The coffee served at The Roastery is from “single origin”.

Mezze with flat breads; tapas and salumi; Greek salads and Moroccan tagines: the pan-Mediterranean menu at Cicada remains one of the best in the city—and ditto the extensive wine list. Gratifyingly it has a setting to match, inside a low-slung, mid-20th-century villa complete with secluded terrace seating. But the most coveted spots are the four tables with chic rattan furniture and white canvas parasols, set in the middle of the erstwhile swimming pool.

With some curious atmospheric descriptions including “colonial European ambiance” and “mysterious Asian feel”, Cicada is a tad pretentious, but nonetheless a very smart meeting place. Perfect for a wine-and-dine meeting where you need to impress, Cicada is fancy.

From tapas to mezze platters, seafood and meat dishes, enjoy Mediterranean cuisine from Cicada in Omotesando. Yellowtail carpaccio with roasted beets and yuzu dressing or Portugese-style grilled frango chicken are just some of the mouthwatering dishes available from this colonial-style restaurant, plus a diverse wine menu from around the world.

If you crave something truly different, you cannot go wrong with Cicada which is one of the long-time hotspots in town serving delectable Mediterranean fare. My favorite is their chicken or lamb tagine, although, to be honest, their entire 3-course lunch tasting menu was excellent. Book in advance if you want to score seats on their terrace.

Harbor and Ivy Place, flies in the sophisticated eatery Cicada. They achieve authenticity with faithful Mediterranean dishes and a natural candle-lit setting. Their fragrant lamb tagine causes quite a buzz amongst the locals and is most enjoyed on their outdoor deck which rests on water.
