Reviews Summary

Gen Yamamoto offers a truly unique and artistic cocktail experience, with many praising the meticulous craftsmanship and innovative, seasonal flavors. While some find the drinks too light and juice-focused for the price, the intimate atmosphere and the bartender's dedication to his craft create a memorable, meditative occasion for most.

"Well crafted cocktails made with seasonal ingredients and the utmost care. You can choose 4-7 cocktails (don’t worry, all of them are quite small) husband and I each had 6 and honestly could have done 7. Everything we had was delicious and interesting. Gen Yamamoto takes great pride in what he does and it shows. While stoic and serious about his craft, he is also welcoming and is happy to answer any questions you have. Highly recommend that you make a reservation here for a unique omakase cocktail experience. FYI no food, just cocktails. My only complaint was that it was very quiet. Could have used some music."

"Amazing experience well worth the time. If you love cocktails this is like the top tier sushi bar equivalent where everything is hand crafted in front of you with the same level of skill and care. Great to experience with up to 8 people."

Scott

"This place might not be for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. And reservation was easy, even though I live in Europe.

If you want traditional cocktails - this isn't a place for you. But if you are looking for something new and special - you should definitely visit Gen Yamamoto.

The cocktails were great, albeit unorthodox, and the barman was nice and professional. At first, I wanted to try 4-5 cocktails. But every drink was something special and every time I heard the ingredients I couldn't believe that this drink would taste good. But every time I was proven wrong. So I decided to go until the end - to the 7th cocktail. And it was the best of them all.

Just some of the ingredients that were used: mashed potatoes, wasabi with pineapple, garlic brandy.

One of the best drinking experiences in my life."

Japan’s culinary creativity is not confined to food, as is reflected by the contents of Gen Yamamoto’s cocktail glasses at his eponymously named bar. This intimate space – it seats only eight people around a counter – showcases one of Tokyo’s most respected new generation cocktail craftsmen performing the modern-day cocktail equivalent of a tea ceremony. Yamamoto offers a bespoke and ever-changing cocktail tasting menu of four or six drinks, which, in keeping with many traditional Japanese arts, reflects shiki, the seasons.

The flight of seven small cocktails began with Gen Yamamoto vigorously muddling hassaku, a nubbly-skinned Japanese citrus in the orange family, and pairing it with Marc de Champagne, a French distillate that’s in the same arena as Italian grappa. It was unlike anything I’ve had before. The day’s creations also included juiced kiwi coupled with soju and sprinkled with matcha, followed by pureed Momotaro tomatoes spiked with Laphroaig and sharpened with shiso.
