Gonpachi in Nishi-Azabu is known as the “ Kill Bill restaurant” because it’s where Quentin Tarantino shot his electrifying swordfight scene. The izakaya looks exactly as it does in the movie: an open, two-floor Japanese warehouse lit by lanterns. Chow down on fresh soba, grilled skewers, and tempura as you bop along to live music, just like the characters in the film.

This is often referred to as the Kill Bill restaurant, as it featured in Quentin Tarantino's famous film. While it's certainly fun to drink in the very picturesque venue and walk down the stairs and pretend you're a scorned Uma Thurman, the food, cocktails and ambience are the real stars of the show. A trip to Gonpachi with friends is a great chance to sample a number of classic Japanese dishes - the set menus are really good value.

Gonpachi is an izakaya in Nishiazabu near Roppongi, famous for being the model location for a fighting scene in the first Kill Bill movie (2003). It is a chain of restaurants with only the one in Nishiazabu having the special interior with the 2 floors and a central court as it is featured in the movie. The other Gonpachi restaurants follow the same interior styling but lack the 2-storey setting.

Rumored to have inspired the restaurant scene in the film “Kill Bill,” this spacious izakaya is a Tokyo institution. Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi clearly considered it one of one of the best izakaya in Tokyo, as he entertained George W. Bush here during an official visit to Japan. Notoriety aside, Gonpachi remains a popular choice for visitors and locals alike.

Just outside of exit 4 of Asakusa Station is Gonpachi Asakusa.* This izakaya restaurant has yakitori as well as other casual Japanese pub style food. They also have a separate gluten free menu* (two pages of gluten free options including gluten free tempura, yakitori and sushi.) Gonpachi Asakusa welcomes children and babies and also has space for strollers.

Gonpachi is an upscale, chain restaurant with a few locations across Tokyo. As I unfortunately learned after making a reservation at their Shibuya location, the ONLY location with gluten free options is Gonpachi Asakusa (looong, sad, gluten free story there)!. After our Shibuya location fail, Dan and I decided to try the Asakusa location.

Opened on January 2017, Gonpachi Asakusa Azumabashi in the most popular sightseeing spot in Tokyo, Asakusa, offers an authentic Japanese cuisine with a great view of Sumida River and Tokyo Sky Tree. Inside the restaurant, you will get humbled with a dim romantic light. Try their overwhelming Halal Kobe Beef Sukiyaki!
