Reviews Summary

Tempura Fukamachi is highly praised for its exceptional Edo-style tempura, prepared with high-quality ingredients and meticulous artistry by a family of chefs. Diners love the light, crispy batter and the attentive explanations from the staff. However, the premium price point and the expensive online reservation handling fee are noted drawbacks.

"Was grateful to be able to secure a spot at restaurant especially during holiday season. Wanted a counter spot but was fully booked so sat at table. You must have reservation so make sure you have one ahead of time. Tempura batter and seasoning for each course was amazing and they tell you how to best enjoy each piece such as salt vs dipping.

Each piece is cared for with perfection and love that its run by father and son. This is a premium restaurant so expect to pay premium price I spent about 400$ USD for two people. It has cozy atmosphere with attentive staff that are warm and welcoming and ensure you understand although we had language barrier. This place is well deserving of Michelin star."

"Tempura Fukamachi is a small tempura restaurant just 1-minute walk from the Kyobashi Station. Online reservation is straightforward, but the handling fee of JPY 4,000 is very expensive. There are only 10 counter seats surrounding the open kitchen, plus 2 tables for two on the side. Servers are polite and efficient. The Lunch Omakase Course is of great quality, though a bit pricey at JPY 20,500/person. Tempura dishes are fresh, crispy and not too oily. Highlights of the lunch include the crunchy Shrimp Tempura (both the head and the body of the shrimp), the juicy Onion Tempura, and the smooth and flavorful Sea Urchin Tempura."

XO Handsome

"Brilliant. Family owned and run, you’re literally welcomed by wife of the chef who keeps ticking away at the tempura with his dad at front of house. Mom and whom I assume is little brother running back of house. What an experience.

Food was good, I liked the option of different set menus. I stumbled upon this place because was close to my accommodation, made reservations and didn’t even know they were Michelin until after the fact. Totally worth a visit and a revisit."

Tokyo’s best places to eat and drink

You may think you have a fair grasp on just how far one could go with food that is dipped in batter and fried in oil. But until you visit Fukamachi, an unassuming but still Michelin-starred eatery in the backstreets of Ginza, you know nothing. Forget that soggy, gluggy stuff you’ve had at home: at Fukamachi the freshest, most seasonally appropriate fish, seafood and vegetables are dipped in lighter-than-air batter and fried in high-quality oil until they’re crisp on the outside and steamed perfectly inside.
