Twenty-odd blocks down Caseros Street from the main plaza, La Casona del Molino is an authentic gem renowned for nightly folk performances; join in by clapping or dancing. It also serves great regional food at extremely decent prices.

A diferencia de otras pe�as de la ciudad, en La Casona no hay shows, sino que en cada una de sus amplias habitaciones de paredes de adobe y decoraci�n antigua los m�sicos comparten vino y cerveza y tocan entre amigos, como si estuvieran en su propia casa. La experiencia se completa con un amplio men� de comidas regionales en el que empanadas, humitas, tamales, locro y cazuela de cabrito son protagonistas.

It was late one evening – it is always late evening in Salta – and my wife and I were in the courtyard of La Casona del Molino (Caseros 2500) drinking cheap wine with ice and eating empanadas when the guitar finally struck up. Three old guys, wobbly after the wine, began their song to the rhythmic strum of the guitar, the off beat of the bombo legüero and ‘clip clip, clip clip’ of the hands of the audience. Between drags on a cigarette and mouthfuls of wine, the three men sang their zambas, chacareras and chamamés for hours.

Salta offers a wide variety of programs and excursions that will allow you to discover its rich cultural identity, visit historical places and enjoy landscapes. From the city, you can take excursions to nearby places such as the Cabra Corral Dam, Cafayate, Cachi, Molinos, Valles Calchaquíes, Quebrada del Toro, San Antonio de los Cobres, La Poma and Iruya. You will also find the spectacular Quebrada de Humahuaca, Maimará, Tilcara, Purmamarca, La Serranía del Hornocal and the Salinas Grandes, among other places of interest.

While some peñas do focus more on stage shows and costumes, we much preferred the authentic vibe at La Casona Del Molino. Rather than sitting with tourists we spent an evening eating, drinking and attempting to sing along to the Spanish tunes with encouragement from locals. The place was packed before music kicked off around midnight when performers –who previously appeared to be dinner guests – busted our their instruments to alternate serenading the crowd into the wee hours.

La Casona del Molino is one of Salta’s ever-popular peñas – places where you can eat, drink and listen to traditional live folk music. It’s always bustling with a mixed crowd of locals and gringos looking to enjoy the tunes with a few glasses of Argentinian wine. It’s by no means off the tourist trail, but there’s a good reason that La Casona is constantly recommended as a must do for anyone visiting Salta.

Una casona colonial antiquísima, cuyas paredes de adobe datan del siglo XVII, es la que acobija a una de las peñas más tradicionales de la ciudad de Salta. Ubicada justo en la esquina de Luis Burela y Caseros, supo ser punto de encuentro de escritores, poetas, músicos y demás personalidades famosas y reconocidas. Hoy, la Casona del Molino sigue vibrando con el folklore y la gastronomía local como banderas.

Otro lugar tradicional, más descontracturado donde quien tiene ganas agarra una guitarra y empieza a cantar. Las empanadas del lugar son también célebres, lo mismo que su amplia carta de comida regional. Se trata de una casona vieja que se encuentra a minutos del centro en la ciudad, y que consta de la modalidad de peña libre, es decir, cualquiera que tenga ganas agarra la guitarra y canta.

Este clásico de los clásicos funciona sobre una construcción de 1671 que en algún momento fue almacén de ramos generales. No es un boliche de empanadas, sino un punto de encuentro, una verdadera peña, mucho más auténtica que las de la calle Balcarce, “for export”. Aquí a las empanadas de carne o de queso se les suma la chance de abrazar el verdadero espíritu folclórico de los salteños.

La Casona del Molino es otro de los bares en Salta que no podés dejar de visitar. Este espacio fusiona lo mejor de la peña folclórica tradicional con un ambiente de bar. Las noches de jueves a domingo se llenan de música, con guitarreadas espontáneas y shows programados donde podés disfrutar de las típicas empanadas salteñas acompañadas de un buen vino regional.

Visiting a peña to hear local folk music is one of the “must-dos” in Salta, and although there are plenty of touristy venues we heard that La Casona del Molino (Luis Burela 1) was the most authentic experience. It’s a multi roomed restaurant serving up traditional food (that’s empanadas for us then) and sangria. As the night progresses the music starts up.

We also considered Peña Balderrama (San Martín 1126) and La Casona del Molino (Luis Burela 1). However, in the end, we followed the recommendation of our hotel stuff and went to La Vieja Estación (Balcarce 875), where they have traditional Salteño dishes and live music on most nights of the week. Whatever you choose, make sure to reserve in advance.

On the other hand, the name is attributed to a grain grinding stone found there (the Piedra del Molino, the highest point of the place). It is said that it was transported in a cart from the locality of Molino to the Lerma Valley. When he reached this place, the axle of the cart broke and the stone remained, giving the name to the highest point.

Nestled in a historic building, La Casona del Molino is a living piece of Salta’s heritage. It’s not your typical nightclub; it’s a peña, a place where locals and visitors alike gather for live folk music and dancing. The atmosphere is electric, with the strumming of guitars and the clapping of hands blending into the night air.

After a quick stop back in hostel to freshen up we headed out for dinner at La Casona del Molino (pictured above). This place might be one of the greatest dining experiences I have ever had. Yeah, the food was great and the wine was cheap but it was the atmosphere that really gave me one of those WTF moments.

Salta is famous for its peñas, venues where musicians come together to play traditional folk music. Most of these have been turned into touristy nightmares with an organised sit-down dinner and staged show. We avoided these but were luckily told about one that retains its authenticity – La Casona del Molino.

While Doña Salta may have adapted for tourism, La Casona del Molino certainly hasn’t. This is a super traditional restaurant in a gorgeous old house; a true peña. There are lots of rooms and alleyways and in each quarter you’ll find music and singing, the best empanadas and a wonderful atmosphere.

After sunset, gauchos and other locals flock to establishments like La Casona del Molino (Luis Burela 1; 0387-434-2835), a hilltop peña on the outskirts of the capital. Here, musicians often perform impromptu jam sessions while couples dance either the chacarera or zamba.

As evening falls, Salteños congregate at cafés around the main square to unwind before heading to a vibrant peña (folk concert) such as La Casona del Molino. Or simply head to hip craft beer haunt, Bier Cervecería Artesanal 00 54 387 556 3145.

La Casona del Molino is the most authentic place to enjoy a spontaneous club, where guests can play guitars for themselves. Address: Cnel, Luis Burela 1, Salta. Days and times: Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 15:00 and from 21:00 to 04:00.

For a particularly unforgettable night out in Salta, head to La Casona del Molino, where amazing food, good cheer, fab music and friendly crowd gifts an authentic peña folkloric experience no visitor should miss.

Now it is not structured in the typical show and dance situation. To get that you should stick to Balcarce. Here the musicians sing and jam late into the night and the locals who know the songs join in.

Venturing further afield from the Balcarce, my favourite venue is the Casona de Molino on the western edge of town, which I revisited recently for the first time in years.
