For good eats, duck into Le Banneton French bakery for a warm, fragrant, croissant and hot, sweet cappuccino. Up at the quiet end of the peninsula where the sacred ceremony of almsgiving (tak-bat) begins at dawn, a little bakery restaurant makes the best baguettes and croissants in Laos. As the mist rolls through the chilly 6am streets, take an alfresco seat and watch the orange-robed monks process from a respectful distance.

Laos’ historical connections to France are reflected in the delicious pastries at Le Banneton, a real French bakery that offers some of the best croissants I’ve had outside of France. I say that with extra confidence knowing that the large French expat population in Luang Prabang frequents Le Banneton and can be overheard catching up with one another in their native tongue just like they would on the streets of Paris. While the pastries are a hit, the traditional breakfast is why most people are regular here.

Known as one of the premiere French bakeries in town, Le Banneton, makes for the perfect place to start your day. It is on the quieter east side of Main Street, Sakkaline Road (turns into Sisavanvong Road further west) so we recommend grabbing a table outside to enjoy the peace and quiet. If you are there early enough, you can watch monks collecting alms on the street outside the cafe as you sip your morning cup of joe.

Many patrons insist the best baguettes in all of Asia are found here, and upscale restaurants in the area source their bread from this very bakery. While they are best known for their unbelievable baked goods, La Banneton is also a much-loved breakfast and brunch spot. Food is more European than Lao, and you’ll find many French and Italian specialties on the menu, like crepes, pizza, quiches, and tartines.

This cafe is located in an ideal spot where you can indulge in temple views in the old historical town of Luang Prabang. I ordered a lemon iced tea which was very refreshing (and perfectly sour!), Lao coffee that was so smooth and rich, and of course, a croissant!. These buttery, soft, warm croissants are what put Le Banneton on the map in Luang Prabang, and what keep travelers coming back again and again.

But the reputation for romance also stems from the aroma of flowers down narrow streets lined with green foliage, numerous restaurants with decks overlooking either river (where you can get very tasty fruit shakes and drinks) and, due to the large amount of French-speaking tourists who frequent Luang Prabang, hearing French spoken on the streets anytime you leave your guesthouse.

A French institution, Le Banneton has been around for the long haul. It's opens early with a generous selection of freshly made croissants and pastries, then carries on through the day with equally generous portions of sandwiches, salads and more. Le Banneton is a wonderful French patisserie, boulangerie and cafe serving fabulous meals and sweet treats.

We did go to a few bakeries in between attractions but I have to single out Le Banneton for swooning our senses.

I really didn't expect to find perfect croissants in the jungles of Laos but wow does Le Banneton Cafe know how to get them just right!. Le Banneton Cafe is the perfect chill breakfast spot when you are after a delicious Western meal. They have great food and delicious coffee so what more could you want?. Try not one of their amazing baguettes full of the freshest ingredients.

Le Banneton is one of the more popular ones and their croissants get sold out by 10.00am on some days. Other popular cafes around include Saffron, Joma and if you’re feeling fancy, Cafe de Laos serves coffee in a Siphon apparatus.

At the top of our list is for coffee, breakfast and baked goods is Le Banneton Cafe French Bakery. The coffee, the service and the breakfasts are great. We loved the French toast and the scrambled eggs with baguette.

Sometimes you just don’t feel like starting your day with rice. On days like that we would turn to the patisserie and French bakery at Le Banneton Cafe. The cafe is open all day serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A favorite of mine, Le Banneton, was the perfect place to linger over a cup of coffee, watching the monks go by as it faces one of the nicest temples in the city.

On the way there, we passed by a French bakery, Le Banneton. I’d forgotten that Laos had been under French rule. Of course I had to go in and buy something.

Just a handful of rooms, with breezy common areas – and you’re a stone’s throw from the monks at Wat Xieng Thong and the excellent pastries at Le Banneton.
