Our top three: Everyone who’s anyone in Luang Prabang

is Laos’s first vegan eatery (no phone; set menu, $21). And even if you’re not staying at the hotel itself, the 3 Nagas café—with extra-fresh Lao court cuisine—is worth
a visit.

Lunch at L’Elephant Vert with its “living” cuisine set menus (from £12) serving tomato carpaccio and coriander and mustard mousse, or at small Cafe Toui where friendly Toui serves souisi pa (fresh fish poached in coconut, basil and a red-chilli broth) for about £4 and a twist on the Cuban mojito, a “cojito”, made with Lao basil, lemongrass and Malibu rum.

Treat yourself to a fine-dining experience after a day of exploring at L’elephant Restaurant. Savour the flavours of France and Laos by digging into mok pa for (mashed fish and coconut steamed in banana leaf) or kroua prak lot meet (sauteed vegetables and mushrooms) and a selection of local and imported wines.

Set in a stunning Sixties-style building, this high-ceilinged Gallic restaurant boasts the best cuisine in the country, made with locally grown vegetables from its organic farm and the finest cuts of meat.

With elegant high-ceilings and stucco pillars, L’Elephant has some of the city’s best French-Lao fusion cuisine, offering the likes of steak tartare alongside banana leaf-grilled tilapia and lemongrass chicken, prepared with fresh ingredients from its very own vegetable garden. One of the restaurants that set the standard for excellent cuisine in Luang Prabang is L’elephant. The French colonial décor is a perfect match for the French-Laotian fusion cuisine served here. Located on a quiet street that parallels the main thoroughfare in town (a street with many of the town’s best restaurants), it’s the perfect spot to escape the night market crowds, enjoy delicious food, and wash it down with a classic French wine.

For our last meal in Luang Prabang, we decided to splurge a little at the fine-dining L’Elephant Restaurant. We ordered the ‘Saveurs du Laos‘ set menu for LAK160k~US$19.5 per person. The set consists of betel leaf soup, steamed pork in lemongrass stalk, chicken salad (laap), fish steamed in banana leaf, grilled pork fillet, river weed, sauteed vegetables, sticky rice; and fruits and ginger ice cream for dessert.

But I’d also like to share with you my top eat experiences in Luang Prabang, beginning with L’Elephant Restaurant. This is often cited as one of the best restaurants in Luang Prabang and I would concur as L’Elephant Restaurant proved to be my best meals in Luang Prabang. L’Elephant is part of a group of restaurants in Luang Prabang owned by a French and Laotian pair.

On the higher end, L’Elephant Restaurant is considered to be the best dining in town. Run by French expats, the open-air colonial room with rattan chairs and twirling fans is as retro-chic as it gets. With a blend of French and Laotian cooking, you can indulge in local Mekong fish stew or coq au vin as just about anything here is extremely good.

A vivacious Euro vibe, colonial decor, an eclectic menu that mixes French classics, like frog legs, with a Laotian sensibility (hello, buffalo tartare), and fresh produce from their organic gardens make L’Eléphant an everpopular place to linger over a meal and bottle of wine. Must-try:** Buffalo tartare or anything on their seasonal vegan menu.

L’elephant is a great place for a romantic dinner or a long, indulgent evening feast. The ornate interior with a wooden bar and tables will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the days of French Indochina. Try the beef tartare and the the coconut and pumpkin soup.

With elegant high-ceilings and stucco pillars, L’Elephant has some of the city’s best French-Lao fusion cuisine. The menu is replete with all things French and the ingredients are always fresh. This is also the place for decent wines including both local and imported varieties.

For fine dining, many recommend Blue Lagoon Restaurant, L’Elephant Restaurant or Phou Savanh, which offer either French or German food with a twist on traditional Asian cuisine. A meal at Blue Lagoon will cost less than LAK300,000 (USD36) per person and will include wine.

Another delicious French restaurant, L’Elephant is right in the heart of the old town. Despite its traditional French menu and elegant setting the food remains very reasonably priced.
