Kung's Cafe Lao

While this list is mostly focused on western breakfasts, and Kung’s Café Lao is technically more of a Lao restaurant, any discussion of breakfast in Vientiane would be incomplete without mentioning Kung’s. This long-time favorite spot, passed on via word of mouth from old to new generations of expatriates, is tucked away in an atmospheric back alley. Kung’s is famous for its delicious fusion dish – the mango and sticky rice pancake, as well as a creamy coconut coffee.

Tucked away in a quiet alley of Phiawat Village, Kung’s Cafe is a real hidden gem for fresh, home-made Laotian cuisine in a cosy, garden-like setting. Dried gourds and greenery hang suspended from the ceiling and painted murals adorn the walls, and the owners pour as much love into their food as they do the decor. Try the hearty and rich yellow curry soup with tofu and mushrooms, or their chicken noodle soup which we think is medicine for the soul.

Located at the end of an alleyway near Wat Si Muang, the outdoor establishment is cosy with overhead trellises filled with plants and hanging gourds. Don’t be surprised if a motorbike drives between the tables while you are sipping on your coconut coffee (you’ll want to go ahead and order a second, they’re that good) and savoring a sticky rice mango pancake. The bathroom contains a garden that feels like a place gnomes and fairies would live in.

My plan for the morning was to do some sightseeing and with the ultimate aim of visiting Kung’s Cafe. The sky turned bright really early in Vientiane this time of the year. By 6am the sun has shone through the gaps of the curtains of my hotel room…Since breakfast was provided for at the hotel, I had a light breakfast before heading out to explore the town.

We made a stop at Kung’s Café Lao for lunch which isn’t along the main road, but down a small alley nestled between two buildings. The hanging gourd inside the café and pot plants give it a nice character, and it did feel like we were eating in someone’s backyard. There are low plastic tables covered with table cloths and stools.

Hidden at the end of a quiet alley, Kung’s Café is a favorite for its lush greenery and peaceful vibe. This small café serves simple but flavorful Lao dishes, along with local coffee and their signature coconut milk latte. It’s a great place to slow down, especially in the morning or early afternoon.

Draped in tropical hanging plants and covered in colourful murals, Kung’s is a cosy cafe tucked away down a little alley a short walk from the city centre. It’s the perfect place to try Laos coffee, which is grown a few hundred kilometres away on the forested Bolaven plateau.

Kung's Café, run by the local Maly, is located in the back of an alley, away from tourist attractions, so it is not that commercial. The cafe specializes in coffee and western brunch, as well as Lao cuisine. The coffee here is popular.
