Not only are the modern renditions of Laos cuisine at Makphet (Behind Wat Ong Teu; 856-21-260-587; friends-international.org) addictive, but proceeds at the vocational training restaurant, run by Friends-International, a nongovernmental organization, support programs for disadvantaged youth. In a cheerful brick-and-wood space with paintings by students hanging on the walls, tourists and development workers share dishes like Ancient Fish (75,000 kip), deep-fried local river fish topped with lemon grass, tamarind and shredded green mango; and a banana flower salad (50,000 kip) accompanied by garlicky grilled pork and sesame seeds. Don’t skip the sesame and peanut-encrusted dumplings with hibiscus syrup (35,000 kip) for dessert.

Makphet Restaurant stands out for more than just its delectable Lao and fusion fare. This establishment is a social enterprise that aims to train and empower street children and marginalized youth by teaching them culinary skills. The restaurant is lauded not only for its humanitarian mission but also for its innovative approach to local ingredients, presenting them in dishes that are both contemporary and deeply rooted in Lao culinary tradition.

Makphet: Aside from the fact that this restaurant helps keep kids off the street by giving them a job here and learning them the skills of the kitchen, the food is absolutely to die for!. An old French villa with pastel colored shutters and balconies on the second floor, is surrounded by seating areas in the garden below (or inside for the airco/fan lovers).

Even though the brunch culture in Vientiane isn’t strong (yet) if there’s one place where you can get a perfect brunch, it has to be Makphet. They have a myriad of delicious light continental and Asian snacks, as well as some ‘modern Laos food’ as they like to refer to it. Definitely worth visiting.
