Reviews Summary

Makphet is highly praised for its outstanding authentic Lao cuisine and its commendable social mission of training disadvantaged youth. Diners consistently highlight the exceptional taste of dishes, particularly the fish preparations, and the warm, attentive service provided by the student staff. While some note the restaurant's location may have changed, the quality of food and the overall positive dining experience remain consistent, making it a recommended stop for those seeking delicious food with a purpose.

"Basic venue serving super tasty food. Great spot for lunch. Staff super friendly and eager to help. Recommended for a quick meal in between sightseeing!"

Mark Seddon

"A decent place to try homemade Lao cuisine. I tried the daily buffet options - the manager told me they're for locals. I imagine it's typical to get a plate of rice and pick 2-3 dishes out of the 7-8 available selections, but since I'm a tourist he offered me a larger portion served on a plate per dish. Which was not a bad thing because I really enjoyed the fish larb! 😋 The sausage wasn't as spicy or herb-y as I'd expected it to be.

Overall I wouldn't mind coming back to try out other dishes."

"the student training aspect is nice but the food is outstanding regardless. the fish with coconut and lime Sauce was one of the best meals I had in 10 days traveling Laos and Vietnam. it was like a savory warm ice cream; hard to describe but it was basically perfect. some teenager here is the best cook in SE Asia."

Not only are the modern renditions of Laos cuisine at Makphet (Behind Wat Ong Teu; 856-21-260-587; friends-international.org) addictive, but proceeds at the vocational training restaurant, run by Friends-International, a nongovernmental organization, support programs for disadvantaged youth. In a cheerful brick-and-wood space with paintings by students hanging on the walls, tourists and development workers share dishes like Ancient Fish (75,000 kip), deep-fried local river fish topped with lemon grass, tamarind and shredded green mango; and a banana flower salad (50,000 kip) accompanied by garlicky grilled pork and sesame seeds. Don’t skip the sesame and peanut-encrusted dumplings with hibiscus syrup (35,000 kip) for dessert.
