Liza Soughayar’s eponymous Paris restaurant has made a name for itself as the French capital’s top address for Lebanese food, but this passionate Beiruti decided to risk all by opening up in her home city too. Renovating a grand 19th-century mansion, she exhibits challenging artworks by young Lebanese artists, and two of the four dining rooms are decorated with audacious one-off wallpaper replicating the old Lebanese Pound bank note and silhouettes of bombed Beirut buildings. The cuisine is a surprising, modern interpretation of traditional dishes such as kebbe nayye (lamb tartar) and loukoz bel selek (sea bass with tahini), while the hummus and tabbouleh are out of this world.

Liza, which first debuted in Paris, opened its signature restaurant in East Beirut in 2013. Named after one of the owners, Liza Asseily, it is a remarkable place that received a warm welcome in no time. After three years, though, they transformed it into one of Beirut’s most beautiful spaces.

Café Em Nazih has the unique quality of making you feel like you’re at home with friends yet surrounded by people from all over the world. Liza is a really nice place, the dining room is covered in mirrors and lights, the floor has gorgeous tiles and the furniture is spot on, it's beautiful and also a bit boojie. I've heard good things about their brunch buffet on weekends, however, we went for dinner, ordering a selection of their mezze as well as dessert. The hummus here is lovely, some say it's the best they had in Beirut, we also had a purslane salad with roasted aubergines and pomegranate that was exceptional - the aubergine cubes were fried crispy on the outside and still soft on the inside.

Walls covered by jungle and city themed wallpaper encompass the restaurant, which happens to be a Lebanese home with three distinct rooms.

Lunch (1 PM): This was probably the highlight of the trip as we had lunch at Liza in Achrafieh, which occupies the second floor of a 19th-century palace. The beautiful restaurant is so well-decorated and designed that you will most likely forget about the food and start walking around taking pictures of the interiors. I highly recommend asking for a table by the windows when booking as it allows for more natural light.

($$$) This designer restaurant is sure to stop you in your tracks as you enter. Everything is Instagram worthy, from their floor to the green furniture to match, the ceiling height large white separators, to the relaxed outdoor setting, it all makes Liza perfect for special occasions but also for that exclusive lunch spot. It is even voted as one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world by Condenast Traveller.
