Tek Sen Restaurant

The menu at Tek Sen Restaurant is extensive, and often so is the queue (come early if you don’t want to take a number). Its reputation harks all the way back to the ’80s, ever since the restaurant began serving its delightful caramelised pork belly and deep-fried belachan chicken (pieces of chicken deep-fried with spicy shrimp paste). In fact, the food here is so good the restaurant will probably outlive most of us in the end.

Our first meal here was in 2009, back when Teochew-Chinese-Malaysian restaurant Tek Sen was a glorified stall with tables occupying an alley and a five-foot way, before it had a Facebook page and an illustrated menu and a few years before its mention in a Lonely Planet guide made tourists as often seen here as locals. When Tek Sen tripled its capacity by relocating to its current double shophouse premises we feared the worst. But quality has remained high, probably because the family that opened the place 25 or so years ago is still on hand, in the kitchen and the front of the house, to insure that your bacon candy is every bit as savory-salty-sweet-lardy as it should be.

Before being a famous Chinese restaurant in Penang, Tek Sen was initially a rice stall that was out together as a simple stand in 1965. Their rice was so good that in no time earned the popularity among the locals and visitors and over the years they managed to pull it off slowly by adding to their menu and variety of delicacies until they turned into a fully established Chinese restaurant in Penang. With a fusion of contemporary and cultural design, they own the space of two shops lots.

The Chinese immigrants that settled in Penang many decades ago brought in their own cuisine that heavily contributed to Penang’s diversity and unique cultural landscape. Last but not least, our favourite: Tek Sen Restaurant (Chinese food). We decided we had to try it after watching a YouTube video of our favourite food fanatic Mark Wiens (check out his blogpost about Tek Sen Restaurant). We ordered a couple of things he recommended: double roasted pork and stir fried homemade tofu in claypot, both winners: absolutely delicious!.

This might just be the best plate of vegetables I’ve ever had. Be prepared to queue up for 2 hours because Tek Sen Restaurant serves up the ABSOLUTE best Heritage Chinese cuisine in all of Penang and everyone knows. Originally started in 1965 as a humble street food stall in Penang, Tek Sen Restaurant has grown to become a culinary institution in George Town.

Prepare to be early at this restaurant in a typical shophouse setting!. They used to have just a simple stall back in 1965 to serve Cantonese, Hakka, Teochew and Nyonya dishes. Along with their extensive ala carte menu, is a pleasing selection of beverages like beer, coffee, local drinks (e.g. water chestnut, sugarcane juice, soya milk etc) and tea!

If you’re looking for a more affordable kind of restaurant but don’t cut corners on its quality, look no further than Teksen Restaurant. This establishment serves Malay and Chinese dishes at an affordable price, and we’re big fans of this combination!. One of the things that we immediately noticed was how aromatic the place was.

One of the busiest eateries in Penang is Teksen Restaurant where traditional Cantonese food is served without any ounce of pretense. Since 1965, Teksen has been satiating locals with deep-fried homemade tofu topped with egg white, prawns and dried scallops. Don’t miss the stir-fried kang kung with sambal sauce and prawns.

Tek Sen Restaurant was founded 45 years ago and, in its second generation, has maintained consistent quality and flavour. Teksen Restaurant, located within George Tow, serves excellent Chinese cuisine, particularly chicken wings. The wings marinated in prawn paste have a great savoury flavour with a mellow sea flavour.

This popular Chinese restaurant in Georgetown is known for its classic dishes with a twist. Their signature dish is the Stir-Fried Pork with Fermented Bean Curd, packed with flavour and a must-try for pork lovers. Other highly recommended dishes include the Spicy Fried Eggplant and the Claypot Braised Fish Head.

18, Lebuh Carnarvon (Carnarvon Street)You’ve probably already figured out that there is some great Chinese food in Penang. The mother of all Chinese restaurants is Tek Sen. Always busy, this is a spot where you will have to wait for a seat. Totally worth it though.

Teksen is a no-frills joint that has won the hearts of many with its traditional Cantonese fare and fusion creations with a local twist. A long queue at peak hours wait to sample the deep-fried homemade tofu, as well as dishes seasoned with assam tumis or sambal.

Tek Sen Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant in Penang, first opened in 1965. It’s extremely popular so I recommend getting there early if you can. Even though it’s always busy and highly recommended, their food does live up to the hype.
