With 7 outlets in JB, the original branch still stands on Jalan Trus, welcoming those coming from the Johor Causeway. But when I heard about the recent upgrades at their Austin Heights location, I couldn’t resist checking it out!

Those who can play the waiting game should brave it out at Restoran Hua Mui, but those who prefer shorter waiting times will want to visit the Tai Hong Kopitiam. Both offer a similar range and quality of food.

Yes, Tueday was the big day but Sang Heng (circa 1950s) remained closed, maybe forever, and I don't really like banana cake so I left Hiap Joo Bakery (circa 1919) for a pack of kaya buns at Salahuddin Bakery (circa 1937) before a late afternoon breakfast of kaya toasts, soft boiled egg and hot tea at Restoran Hua Mui (1946) that should have been the sop kambing I craved for because dinner, although free, is a disappointing bowl of fish that someone choose for me because I asked him to.

Along the same street, Restoran Hua Mui and It Roo Cafe fight it out as to who serves the best Hainanese chicken chop in town. It Roo Cafe claims the official title, having been awarded the “Best Chicken Chop in Malaysia” by The Star newspaper in 2003, but others argue Hua Mui’s is better. There were no empty tables when I arrived at Hua Mui Restaurant. It was packed on both floors, and I had to wait a little while before a table was made available for me. I was alone, so I ended up sharing it with two elderly ladies.

We set off early in the morning to make our way to Johor Bahru. Thought there would be a lot of people going in and that traffic would be heavy but it wasn’t so. Didn’t take us long at all to cross the Causeway.

Nestled along the foodie haven of Jalan Tras and Jalan Dhoby lies Restoran Hua Mui, an old-school coffee shop that is said to be the birthplace of the original, authentic Hainanese chicken chop.

Coffee O coupled with butter toast and soft-boiled eggs was my favorite. Trying it once, I come again and again even though Restoran Hua Mui is far away from my house.

This dish is lightly battered, fried, and served with a savoury gravy. The chicken chop comes with fries and vegetables on the side. It’s simple but full of flavour.

I have been craving this for quite sometime until I manage to find it out at this kopitiam. The fried chicken chop was not oily while retain its freshness and juicy.
