Reviews Summary

Old China Cafe is praised for its authentic Nyonya cuisine and unique, charming retro ambiance that transports diners back in time. Reviewers highlight the delicious food, attentive service, and affordable prices, making it a great cultural experience. However, some found the flavors milder than expected or the atmosphere less peaceful during busy evening hours.

"Yummy Hokkien noodles, chicken rendang was great, blue pea rice with delicious nonya chupchai was mouth watering. It's a shame will not be able to come back so soon.😃😃😃 . Very nice retro decor and friendly service. Easy to find in south Chinatown."

Daryl Tan

"I was expecting a burst of flavours but I was rather disappointed.

Upon seeing ayam buah keluak in their menu, I ordered the fried rice thinking I’d get ayam buah keluak fried rice with ayam buah keluak. But I got served the fried rice with fried chicken instead. I was still ok with this.

I, unfortunately, did not get the strong flavours from the buah keluak in the fried rice. I felt like it didn’t do justice to buah keluak. The taste was very mild. Even the belacan wasn’t spicy!

Could be that they’re catering to tourists tastebuds considering that there were only tourists when I was there.

The masala tea in a pot is also quite a new concept to me. I’ve never had masala tea served deconstructed to me. Not sure if I like it or not.

But I do love the music that was playing. Very nostalgic. But why was it only played at the other side of the restaurant?

That being said, the food here is affordable given the location."

Edrie Boomz

"Food was just fine for me and the portion. They give 2 pieces of chicken each order with lunch set meals. Drink was sour plum. Not bad, i like it. Not too sweet.

Overall it is ok for me since my first time.

Environment decoration using the restaurant name, old china. Kinda get the vibe."

Petaling Street Food Guide - 11 Best Restaurants in Kuala Lumpur

By its signage, Old China calls itself a "restaurant & antique gallery." It’s the only place I know of where you can eat your way through a belt-busting Nyonya meal—a category of Malaysian cuisine that’s heavily influenced by the Portuguese—surrounded by sepia portraitures and dusty calligraphy scrolls that transport you back to 1900s colonial Malaysia. There are classic rendangs and laksas done with Eurasian flair, tamarind-tinged pork masak asam, and sago gula melaka (palm pearls with Malaccan sugar) to end the meal.
