Formerly the guild hall of the Selangor & Federal Territory Laundry Association, the place has been well-kept and preserved to remind visitors of the Chinese community’s old social life during the 1850s hard-working, tin-mining scene in Ampang – a key piece of history!. They specialize in serving traditional Baba Nyonya (descendants of an ethnic group in which Chinese people adopted Malay culture into their way of life) cuisine derived from the communities in Malacca and Penang. *Note: Reservations will have to be made beforehand.

By its signage, Old China calls itself a "restaurant & antique gallery." It’s the only place I know of where you can eat your way through a belt-busting Nyonya meal—a category of Malaysian cuisine that’s heavily influenced by the Portuguese—surrounded by sepia portraitures and dusty calligraphy scrolls that transport you back to 1900s colonial Malaysia. There are classic rendangs and laksas done with Eurasian flair, tamarind-tinged pork masak asam, and sago gula melaka (palm pearls with Malaccan sugar) to end the meal.

Serving dishes that originated from the Baba Nonya communities of Malacca as well as Penang, Old China Cafe is where you need to go for authentic Malaysian food, or to be specific, Nyonya cuisine. For those who do not know, Nyonya food features Chinese ingredients that are cooked with Malay spices and techniques. It draws influence from the Chinese, Malay, Portuguese, Dutch, and even the English.

Step back in time at Old China Cafe, a charming spot in Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant Chinatown. Sporting a slightly grander interior than Chinatown outlet, the restaurant maintains the same hospitality and menu, but keeps it pork-free to entice more visitors, especially the Muslim crowd (Malaysia is an Islamic country).

Set in a pre-war shophouse, Old China remains its charm, with an added touch of modernism. If you’re looking for some places to eat in Petaling Street KL and want an escape from Chinese food, Old China might be the perfect choice. Serving Peranakan food, dining can be pretty fun here as Peranakan food is always about the flavors.
