Providing a variety of coffee blends from single beans to secret mixtures known only by the highly-trained baristas, VCR delivers arguably Kuala Lumpur’s best cup of coffee. From the outside, the black-coloured building sits between traditional shophouses and modern high-rises.

VCR isn’t just a café for discerning coffee drinkers; as a bonus, it’s also starkly attractive. Remodeled from a building on-site, the café retains much of its original charm and old-world feel while an airy, breezy, rattan-chaired setup dominates the first floor. Owner Andrew Lee and business partner Lee Ee Han strive tirelessly to make ideal cups of coffee from single-origin beans and unique blends.

With a location within the city centre and an outpost in the trendy Bangsar district, VCR is one of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular specialty coffee shops. The café’s all-black exterior – which applies both locations – stands out amid the surrounding buildings, while inside you’ll find a team of baristas doling out delicious brews made with their in-house roasted beans. We recommend going for the cold brew or an espresso tonic or try their house-made kombucha if you’re after something tart and refreshing.

The team behind VCR, which established its first-ever café in Bukit Bintang back in 2012, launched several café spin-offs amidst various MCOs—one of which is VCR Bakehouse. This venture marks its ability to thrive despite lockdowns, while providing a bakery-focused destination for loyal fans of the VCR brand to get their hands on “good honest bread” including croissants, Danish pastries, eclairs, buns, and many more options.

Slightly removed from the central area (but still in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, in the old Pulu district), local coffee roastery VCR’s main café is industrial-chic. Housed in a redeveloped space built in 1927, it now welcomes hordes of locals and tourists looking for a tasty and original brunch on its two floors. Turkish-style eggs, three-cheese toastie, and French toast with homemade coffee ice cream are among the menu highlights.

One of the more established coffee shops in KL, VCR has a cult following at their two branches in Bangsar and the heart of KL. Their breakfast menu, along with their all-day menu, makes this an ideal place for when you need a coffee in the middle of your day, or just need a place to work remotely. Aside from the standard cappuccino, piccolo lattes and flat whites, they also have filtered coffee for the coffee connoisseur within.

Tucked in between Bukit Bintangs skyscrapers and shopping centers, VCR found its home in a 90-year-old two-story building at Jalan Galloway in the year 2013. The founder Andrew Lee had a vision that has since transformed it into one of the city’s most cherished third-wave pioneers. What began as a multi-roaster café has evolved into a full-throated roasting operation, with VCR now producing their own expertly sourced beans.

I arrived at VCR, on the southern side of Bukit Bintang, by way of Imbi Market at ICC Pudu. The two aren't particularly far apart but the walk was quite challenging on account of the dearth of pavements and the ongoing construction. As such, I was a little hot and bothered by the time I got to VCR, but sitting inside the cool cafe, with its high ceilings, elegant second floor and industrial-chic décor, I soon found my zen.

Located on Jalan Galloway, the cafe’s building was built in 1927 near the old Pudu Jail and is believed to have housed most of their wardens – hence the name Galloway. This cosy and relaxed café in the heart of Kuala Lumpur serves a Western-style brunch between 9am and 6pm. Check out their Scandinavian Breakfast with dill-cured salmon, or if you’re extra hungry, their hearty VCR Big Breakfast will surely fill you up!

Mixing the influence of contemporary artisanal bakeries and traditional bakeries, the VCR Bakehouse aims to provide classic baked goods but better – and at times, with a unique twist. Drop by their bakehouse and try their croissants especially the special ones crafted with different flavours that’s mouth-watering and fulfilling.

Located at Mont Kiara, VCR Bakehouse is an open concept artisan bakery to satisfy all your French pastry cravings. Offering some of the best croissants in KL, it’s no wonder why it gets crowded even on a weekday morning. While you’re there, be sure to try their Milo Dinosaur Croissant, Almond Croissant and French Butter Croissant as they’re some of the best selling items on the menu.

One of the most good-looking brunch places in KL is perched on Jalan Galloway, a curiously unusual option for a contemporary coffee spot. Upon entering VCR, you’ll instantly fall heads over heels with its state-of-the-art, minimal design and the soundtrack filling the airwaves of the café. The place is remodelled from a building on-site, while much of its original charm is retained.

It’s often all about personal preferences when it comes to beans and coffee, and VCR as expected is the perfect place to get your caffeine fix whether it’s an espresso, a cold brew or even a Chemex pour. Packed with beans from around the world, they have a fine selection of medium to full-bodied beans that are to die for. Plus, they have one of the best brunch menus in town.

Located on a quiet street just outside the party center of Bukit Bintang, this spacious spot is at the top of many digital nomad lists for good reason. (Note: There’s another smaller location in Bangsar, but we preferred this one.) Given the name, we were expecting to see some rad ’80s décor, but VCR is very much a sleek, modern café with just a touch of wicker.

In a cute little micro-neighborhood of Bukit Bintang, there’s a lot of cute cafes, boutiques, and bars in this trendy little section of KL. VCR is a lovely specialty coffee shop that has branched out to other places in Malaysia and done exceptionally well. Their espresso game is particularly strong, with a menu that goes well beyond the standards.

Another good thing about this cafe is that VCR has a few branches around Kuala Lumpur. If you’re focusing solely on their cafe branches, you could either go to the one in Galloway or in Bangsar.

By the number of expats hanging around VCR on the weekend, you'd be right in thinking this place knows how to make a good cup of coffee. They seem to get everything right from their flawless flat white to their popular brunch. I can personally vouch for their avocado on toast which comes with feta cheese, pomegranate and roasted quinoa.

The sister branch of VCR cafe, VCR Bakehouse is an enclave of small-batch pastries made fresh on the premises daily. Though a relative newcomer, its croissants have risen up the ranks as one of the best in KL. The Bakehouse also doubles as a sandwich joint, aptly named VCR Stacks, serving sweet and savoury combos using fresh sourdough.

Walking into VCR, I was instantly in love with the modern, minimal design and the soundtrack filling the airwaves of the café. The menu offered something for vegans, vegetarians, and those obtaining a kosher diet. There were so many digital nomads and freelancers working away thanks to the speedy WiFi and variety of seating options.

Located in the heart of Bangsar, VCR is a Melbourne inspired cafe andthe design idea came from olden cassette tapes and so. The exterior is beautifully designed with black and as for the interior, it is designed with austere elements and natural lighting for a simple look. VCR serves many unique dishes for individuality.

You are likely to be wonderstruck by the quaint old-world charm of this unique cafe that serves delicious cakes alongside hot beverages. It is definitely the cafe to visit if you happen to be a true coffee aficionado. The single bean coffee is highly popular here as are the unique blends along with hot chocolate drinks.

One of the nicest and most sought after cafes in Bukit Bintang, VCR has a cute little front yard, a co-working space on the first floor, and an open-air lobby. The breakfast spread is amazing, we tried the Turkish eggs, and avo toasts and loved them both. They also have a range of fresh bakes, and impeccable coffee.

Decked out with dark wood and steel furnishings, the second floor is typically where you’ll find people working or studying. There’s free Wi-Fi and charging points here, though that means it’s often teeming with patrons.

Come to VCR for the award-winning baristas, and stay for the cosy environment. You might mistake this place for someone’s home, with couches for lounging, a breezy balcony and charming rattan furniture. As for the coffee, you know your espresso is in safe hands with a line-up of rotating single origins.

For something more filling (think weekend brunch), Antipodean (selected outlets have play areas for the kiddos!) and VCR dishes up some of the best all-day breakfast dishes. For some hearty dishes with the fam, we like Red Kettle for its homemade comfort food dishes.

VCR has a simple fit-out but does excellent coffee, with no service charge. They have free wifi and plenty of seating. We ate off their breakfast menu once (scrambled eggs and salmon with Parmesan and sambal) – 10/10.
