Kuala Lumpur is a fusion of multiple cultures that intertwine and overlap. I often take overseas friends to places like Wong Ah Wah on Jalan Alor, where the bustling street offers a unique experience beyond just the food. I also enjoy exploring spots like Queen’s Restaurant on Peel Road for its hearty sup kambing (mutton soup) and nasi lemak.

Many would consider Wong Ah Wah to be the ultimate king of chicken wings in KL. This roadside-stall-turned-five-shop-lot empire has been serving up chicken wing realness for years and years now, and they still attract large crowds everyday. Their juicy chicken wings dripping in homemade glaze makes countless mouths instantly water, and lots of patrons have praised the chicken wing angels for bestowing us with what’s considered as the best chicken wings you can get in KL.

At the end of the street, wait for a table at Wong Ah Wah (don’t worry, tables free up frequently – or agree to share a table and get seated more quickly!) where they specialize is BBQ chicken wings and satay sticks. Our next stop was the “Mickey Mouse restaurant on Jalan Alor,” i.e. the restaurant with a sign that seemingly rips off Disney… It is called Wong Ah Wah Restaurant and is known for its chicken wings. Unlike the other places that we had stopped on this tour, Wong Ah Wah Restaurant is actually a sit down restaurant and it was packed when we arrived. Here, we sat with one of TK’s tour guide friends (also, a huge foodie), which was very fun.

Stalls to look out for include: 1 +1, great for ‘drunken’ chicken mee (noodles) with rice wine, Hong Kong dim sum and wantons; Wong Ah Wah, great for spicy chicken wings, grilled fish and shellfish, tofu and satay; and the ever-popular however unnamed frog porridge stall – you can choose to have ‘spicy’ where the frogs legs are served separate or ‘non-spicy’ where they’re mixed in with the tasty rice gruel.

Located on Jalan Alor Street, Wong Ah Wah (W.A.W) is a well-known Chinese Zi Char restaurant in Kuala Lumpur that has been serving customers for over 70 years. Originally starting as a humble stall, it has now grown to include five stalls in a single row. The restaurant is famous for its barbecued chicken wings, a must-try dish for both locals and tourists.

Head to Jalan Ah Lor, which is open late every night, Masjid India (excellent Malay as well as Indian food), or Chinatown Night Market, where you'll find the best Hokkein Mee in town. These steaming bowls of slippery thick noodles are braised with squid, pork, cabbage, soy sauce, and that magic ingredient - pork lard!

WAW still stands as a prominent contender with their BBQ charcoal grilled wings. Marinated in a complex combination of soy sauce, honey, pepper, garlic, ginger, and spring onions, you get an utmost fragrant, juicy, and smoky serving of chicken wings with slightly burnt skin from the radiating charcoal grill.

Wong Ah Wah is like one of the famous food in the KL City Area and it is well-known among the locals and foreign food hunters. There are often many foreigners coming to the shop to try them. The BBQ Chicken Wings have its secret recipe to make it so delicious.

Ask any KL dweller where to find some of the best chicken wings and there's a strong possibility Wong Ah Wah's name might pop up. While not exclusively known for their barbecued wings, these smoky, addictive pieces of bird are worth just the visit alone.
