After a hot afternoon spent exploring Kuching, why not cool down with a bowl of shaved ice prepared 18 different ways by a veteran ais kacang vendor?. Swee Kang is popular for its traditional yet innovative desserts, featuring treats with names such as “Matahorn” (a bowl reminiscent of the Matterhorn Mountain) and “White Lady” (a milky drink with surprises at the bottom).

When it comes to Kuching food in the form of teatime treats, head down over to Swee Kang at Jalan Haji Taha. The family-run ABC (that’s the Malaysian version of shaved ice for you, short for Air Batu Campur) business has been operating for generations, and has achieved a cult-like adoration among the locals. After all, it is the favourite spot in town where you can kick back and relax in the late afternoons.

Here’s another recommended ais kacang place in Kuching called Swee Kang Ais Kacang. It occupies two shop lots, where they sell not only the usual ABC but also others such as Kacang Susu and Kacang Chendol, just to name a few. Their classic ABC itself is already good enough with all the usual ingredients included and best of all, it doesn’t taste overly sweet.

Swee Kang Ais Kacang shop started their business in 1953 and has relocated to a two-storey shophouse at Kampung Bandarshah. There is an open counter where you see a man preparing customers’ order in action. He is the dessert mixologist that sets his mixing in the right proportion.

Ais Kacang sememangnya dessert yang sentiasa dicari walau dimana sahaja tambah-tambah lagi dimusim panas. Selain ais kacang, anda juga boleh mendapatkan makanan ringan seperti rojak. Anda juga boleh mencuba ais durian disini dan pelbagai air lain yang menarik disini.

Manisan yang popular di Kuching, Sarawak seperti White Lady ( seperti dalam gambar dibawah ) boleh didapati disini dengan harga RM2.80. Selain White Lady, anda boleh cuba menu seperti Bihun Belacan, Char Kueh Teow, Rojak, Sotong Kangkung dan juga ice kacang.

Swee Kang has all sorts of teatime goodness that you can imagine such as jagung susu, laici kang or white lady. People of all races and religion don’t only come here for its shaved ice, but also delicacies like rojak. cha kueh and lok-lok.

Most places in Kuching are what we’d call “coffee shops” in Singapore, by which we mean a large open-air area, with 3-6 stalls, owned by a proprietor. I was brought here to try Sarawak laksa and ice kachang, and it did not disappoint.

The Air Batu Campur (RM 3.00) is the standard Ais Kacang with shaved ice and not particularly sweet. White Lady (RM 3.80) on the other hand, is more refreshing with a lemon taste and has some fruits in the drinks.
