SAN JOSE DEL CABO - When we took a 3 week family trip around Baja California Sur last year, one of our favorite discoveries was Tacos Los Claros in downtown San Jose del Cabo (with two other locations on Highway 1 toward the airport and Cabo San Lucas). Approaching lunchtime while tooling around the historic Spanish Colonial town one day, El Gringo asked the locals where to find the "...best mariscos tacos in town." Three out of four locals directed us to Tacos Los Claros, about halfway between downtown and the beach (the fourth local was a taco shop owner and tried to lure us in with free margaritas...to no avail. El Gringo may be cheap, but he is not easy).

Although it may not look like much from the street -- taxidermy stuffed, wall-mounted gamefish are about the only decorative touches in a modest space with a dozen or so tables -- Tacos Gardenias is a treasure trove of delicious Mexican comfort food specialties. The place has been around for what seems like forever (it opened in 1980, when the marina was still being dredged) and it remains one of the Land's End city's signature taqueras, with a convenient location a few blocks from Playa El Mdano. Fresh fish and shrimp are included in almost every menu item; not only in tacos but in quesadillas, ceviches, salads and soups.

In a community that as recently as 50 years was a small fishing village, such longevity is remarkably rare and speaks to an enduring loyalty among both locals and visitors. Gardenias remains the taqueria in the vicinity of Médano Beach, the place the bikini and board shorts clad crowds invariably head after working on their tans and their cerveza tolerance.

This hot spot just a short stroll from Medano beach is one of the best places to grab a seafood cocktail in town, remember to order the one with octopus and fish. Pair that with one of their oversized margaritas and you are good to go. As far as tacos go, you have to order the shrimp tacos, they are to die for, served on a fresh made tortilla you can fix this up anyway you desire with the numerous toppings that they provide.

I have not eaten at Tacos Gardenias since being gluten-free; however, other travelers have reported that they ate their without any problems using their gluten-free travel card. Travelers report many options, although they do not offer a dedicated gluten-free fryer so you are limited to grilled items. I recommend using a gluten-free travel card whenever celiac travelers dine at smaller establishments such as Tacos Gardenias.
