Expect Yucatec favorites, from the famous cochinita pibil (slow-cooked pulled pork) to the less-known tikin xic (marinated seafood wrapped in banana leaf).

For contemporary, high-end Yucatecan cuisine, look no further than K’u’uk. Chef Pedro Evia has taken the spirit of regional food and given it a modern twist. Very good breakfast of superb Sopa de Lima and one taco of cochinillo Pibil for me, plus lemonade. Partner had eggs with bacon, black beans, and platanos maduros, plus lemonade. Next time will try the Chaya beverage.

This unpretentious restaurant in the center of the city serves great classic Yucatecan dishes at very reasonable prices. To get a broad understanding of the region’s cuisine, we ordered Los 4 Yucos, a platter with four of the most representative dishes of Yucatan: cochinita pibil, or pork wrapped in banana leaves and cooked slowly underground; pavo en relleno negro, turkey cooked in a typical dark sauce; pavo in sac-ol indio, turkey served in a white sauce made with turkey broth, flour, corn and spices; and pavo al pipián, turkey in a pumpkin seed sauce.

Chaya Maya restaurant is a favorite tourist spot and deserves its good reputation. Having worked up an appetite as we walked the area, we decided to stop for lunch at Restaurant Chaya Maya (Calle 62 at Calle 57).The restaurant's delicious meals are accompanied by an unending supply of fresh tortillas cooked by these two Maya women sitting next to the front window. They wear the traditional, beautifully-embroidered dress called terno de gala, still worn daily by many of Mérida's women.

Three good places to try the local fare are La Chaya Maya on Calle 55, for a semi-formal evening meal with gloriously kitsch décor and a historical setting. If you’re not feeling grandiose, though, you can enjoy many of the same dishes in the small-but-popular restaurant El Trapiche, on Calle 62, less than a block north of the Plaza Principal. The presentation isn’t quite as elaborate as in La Chaya Maya, but the food is just as good, and half the price.

We also both had some fresh juices which were delicious and I had an horchata for something sweet to finish!.

La Chaya Maya is also very popular though I wasn’t a fan of the queso relleno here, and I’m not sure whether it was just the restaurant or the dish itself (again, I just wasn’t a fan of stuffed cheese, which is so weird considering how much I love cheese in general). When it comes to marquesitas, just look for a colorful stand or street vendor as you’re walking around and you’ll be in the right place!

La Chaya Maya: Located at Calles 57 and 62 at Calle 62 481, this is a really good restaurant featuring Yucatan specialties. I had dinner there and had the Tres Mosqueteros (3 Musketeers), thanks to the NY Times. It consisted of pureed bananas and three wonderful regional sauces served over turkey, including a relleno negro sauce made of burnt chilles and spices and a pipian, or pumpkin seed, sauce.

There are two locations, but we went to the La Chaya Maya Casona location because it has a beautiful open-air courtyard in the middle of it, which is a common theme at restaurants in Mérida, which we loved!. At La Chaya Maya you can try many Yucatecan dishes like cochinita pibil, papadzul, huevos, motuleños, poc chuc, and lots more!

The plaza has the feel of an European center to it.

The dreadful Chaya Maya spinoff is just half a block down calle 55. Now the big news last summer is Mercado 60 which is a block up calle 60 and open from 6 pm to 2.30. It´s a glorified food court in a deserted parking lot.
