Reviews Summary

La Pigua is celebrated for its high-quality, fresh seafood, particularly its stone crab claws, coconut shrimp, and octopus dishes. While many praise the delicious flavors and professional service, some diners find the prices high and criticize aspects of the service, such as rushed dessert orders or a lack of attentiveness when not ordering suggested items.

"The waiters were charming and took good care of us, we couldn’t resiste to eat the oysters and decided to take one octopus to share, they brought two plates of half the order which was very convenient to have rather than one plate at the center, i grew very picky on the margaritas this one was made with sugar instead of Cointreau, still very good, pricy but worth it, the only thing was that the table next to us was very loud on her personal conversation ( i ll spare the detail of her displaying her surgery )"

AJ Az

"Excelente place for special occasion and to enjoy delicious seafood. Crab, shrimp and octopus were the hit"

Jean Paul Talledo Vilela

"This has been a Merida institution for seafood amongst locals. It has been totally remodeled over the past few years. The service was up to standard as was the decor. A little more effort on the presentation, the food was ok. The pulpo served right and the shrimp a bit over cooked… it was a pleasant meal. $$&"

Hotels, Restaurants, Sights and Shopping in Mérida, Mexico

At La Pigua a high-energy crowd does lunch over shots of Herradura or sangrita, a devil-red drink with tomato juice, grenadine, and hot chilies. Ignore the dull decor and focus on the haute Yucatecan seafood: coconut-crusted shrimp, fish in a buttery mojo de ajo, and pan de cazón, a rich dish of shark layered with tomato sauce (Av. Cupules at Calle 62; 920-3605; entrées from $5). Lovely, global, and expensive, the hotel and restaurant Rosas & Xocolate is the place for big-night-out romance and chef David Segovia’s fine nuevo-Mexican cuisine: roast duck with local longaniza sausage, chili xcatic, and melon; or deconstructed fish panuchos with cured nopales (Paseo de Montejo 480; 924-2992; entrées from $14).

At the town's favorite lunch spot, glass walls replicate an oblong Maya house, which is surrounded by a profusion of plants. Seafood, with a campechano twist, reigns supreme here, and a truly ambitious meal might start with calamari, stone-crab claws, or camarones al coco (coconut-encrusted shrimp), perhaps followed by pan de cazón (a shark-meat casserole that's one of Campeche's most distinctive dishes) or robalo fish topped with puréed cilantro, parsley, orange, and olive oil. For dessert, the classic choice is the signature and impossibly sweet coconut cake.
