Flower-filled fish bowls on the tables and splashes of pink and red give this vivacious 90-cover restaurant – one of two officially tied to the excellent Las Alcobas hotel – a youthful, contemporary feel. Feminine and feminist blur colourfully on chef Martha Ortiz’s creative menus – a 'Feminine Psychedelia' evening menu featured 'colour-shifting lime soup' and 'octopus with vivid colours'. Flavours, too, are excitingly original but rooted in the traditional Mexican kitchen, with fish ceviches livened up with mango, guacamole with pomegranate and the steak with sweet oranges and 'pre-Hispanic papyrus'.

From the high cuisine of Dulce Patria restaurant in the Polanco neighborhood to the sweet corn grilled in oil drums on the street, we didn't eat anything we didn't want more of. We grazed on an ear of corn and some mini bananas before lunch and tacos for two at the Coyoacan market. Our only challenge was deciding what kind of fruit smoothie to drink, so we just ordered a bunch of them to sample.

The most obvious and most talked about restaurant is Pujol, which I will write about soon but there’s also a restaurant led by a strong woman, chef and restauranteur Martha Ortiz called Dulce Patria, meaning Sweet Homeland. (Ms. Ortiz has another restaurant, Ella Canta in London, U.K.) This restaurant is consistently listed among Latin America’s top 50 restaurants for the past few years. The restaurant had tables filled with diners on a Wednesday night and enjoying Chef Oritz’s bold, vibrantly flavored food that has an artistic, sensual, female perspective to Mexican cuisine.

Run by chef Martha Ortiz, the daughter of Mexican artist Martha Chapa, Dulce Patria (Sweet Homeland) restaurant makes up part of Las Alcobas boutique hotel in Polanco. Chef Ortiz channels the spirit of artist Frida Kahlo with an avant-garde interior design that is as colourful and creative as the modern Mexican food she serves. Feminine, exuberant and wonderfully idiosyncratic, Dulce Patria is packed full of character from the chilled horchata cocktail to the petits fours served on a plate under a wooden carousel horse sculpture.

Before her tenure as a judge on Top Chef Mexico, chef Martha Ortiz was already a force to be reckoned with. Their approach to their namesake margarita is no exception. It’s an eye-catching, bright pink frozen beverage topped with a cactus flower and rimmed with golden sugar.

Dulce Patria: This is where you go if you're planning to propose, or are hitting a milestone birthday. The baroque decor—lots of pinks and reds—is just right for a celebration, as is the food, which takes dishes from across Mexico and turns them into works of art for both the eye and the palate. A truly delightful place to dine.

A venture of chef Marta Ortiz, the much-heralded force behind Aguilla y Sol, is this distinctive modern rethink of Mexican food, with impeccable presentation. The ceviche, for example, or the mole enchiladas (the classic Mexican mole arranged over tortillas) are delicious. It’s located in the Las Alcobas hotel.
