What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Em offers an innovative tasting menu with Japanese-Mexican fusion, praised for its presentation and unique flavors. While many find the dishes super tasty and memorable, some reviews mention issues with flavor depth, cramped seating, and inconsistent service. There are also concerns raised about food safety and unexpected charges.
"Fantastic dinner experience. Plenty of food for two hungry and particular Americans that barely at that day. Stellar presentation and incredibly tasty. Of the 12 course meal, nothing was even mediocre. Most was fantastic. Highly recommend."

"My girlfriend and I decided to dine here for our anniversary.
FOOD
I appreciated the attempt at innovation in the dishes. However, as we made our way through the first few courses, we found that the flavors just didn’t deliver. We didn’t want to feel pressured to enjoy the meal just because the restaurant holds a Michelin star — we genuinely didn’t enjoy the taste. My girlfriend had trouble finishing her food, and after the fifth course, we decided to discontinue the tasting.
I normally don’t write reviews based on taste, since I believe it’s subjective. But in this case, my girlfriend began to feel uncomfortable and nauseous — which was very unusual for her. We're avid foodies and have tried a wide variety of cuisines from simple street stalls to michelin star fine dining establishments, so this reaction was not typical. I informed the staff that we’d be leaving early to get her home and that it wasn’t due to poor service.
SERVICE
The service, in my opinion, was attentive and professional throughout our visit. Even though we didn’t complete the tasting menu, I fully intended to pay for what we had and told the staff that our early departure had nothing to do with them.
However, at the end of the meal, our server asked how much I’d like to tip. I told him “10%,” which I felt was fair given the circumstances — they did a fine job, but we didn’t stay for the full experience. He nodded in acknowledgment.
Once we got home, I realized the server had entered a 20% tip instead of 10%. That’s on me for not checking the receipt at the time, but I trusted the establishment — especially being a fine dining, Michelin-starred restaurant. A mistake like that feels dishonest and unacceptable. “Ten” and “twenty” are clearly different, and our communication throughout the night had been clear and in English.
This was the only time during our entire trip to CDMX that we encountered something like this, and it's disheartening that it happened at one of the restaurants we were most looking forward to.
After reaching out to Em, they did verify the situation and refunded the tip difference — which I appreciate. We may never know whether it was a genuine misunderstanding or something more intentional, but the overall experience was disappointing. One of our more expensive and "highly regarded" meals of the trips became our largest headache experience. What should have been a highlight of our trip turned out to be the only letdown.
AMBIENCE
I don’t typically comment on ambiance, but the space we were seated in felt cramped, with tables placed very close to one another. There wasn’t much of a sense of privacy, which may or may not matter depending on your preferences."

"This was probably the best meal of my life so far, really fun eating experience with a mixture of hand food and others. They did a really good job of building dishes that incorporated various aspects of Mexico and its culture, which made it an amazing dinner to kick off a trip.
My favorite dish was probably the tuna crudo, but all of it was a joy to eat."

A Food Influencer’s Guide Through Mexico City Without Eating A Single Taco
Located in Mexico City’s Cuauhtémoc neighborhood, EMserves a Japanese-leaning tasting menu. Request a seat at the central dining bar to watch chefs prepare dishes like a fun and refreshing Mexican riff on a Japanese temakihand roll (which is nori seaweed assembled with white rice, squash blossoms, and local lettuces spiked with a yuzu dressing and a sprinkle of tart and crumbly cotija cheese). Traditionally in Japan, hand rolls are filled with various types of seafood, but chef Lucho Martinez’s plant-based take incorporates some of Mexico’s most iconic ingredients: squash blossoms and tangy cotija cheese, yielding a playful new way to eat your greens.

Where to Eat in Mexico City
Em is an upscale restaurant in the heart of Roma Norte, from chef Lucho Martínez. The venue is romantic and charming (perfect for a date night), with pink marble tables and adorable design details. There is an à la carte menu offered, but we opted for the omakase, a nine course seasonal tasting menu featuring local Mexican ingredients with Japanese influences.
An insider's guide to Mexico City, the tastiest destination in North America right now
The next day I decide to level up on the gorging and meet Diego at Em, a Roma Norte farm-to-table where we are ushered upstairs to a small air-conditioned bar. The electricity has failed (which happens often, even in the best neighbourhoods) and the main dining room is out of service. Eating a £100 tasting menu in a small upstairs bar is very Mexico City.
My Favorite Dishes From Restaurants In CDMX – Soy Amber
I already wrote an entire article about Em because I love Lucho's cooking. In this article I mention that I have a particular love for fried chicken because my mother is from Belize and my favorite dish growing up was her Belizean-style fried chicken. As a result, I am a qualified critic when it comes to this dish and I am very difficult to please.
