Reviews Summary

Hugo is celebrated for its chic, romantic ambiance and an impressive selection of natural wines, making it a top choice for dates and intimate gatherings. Diners rave about the standout small plates, particularly the gnocchi and radicchio salad, though some find the prices on the higher side for Mexico City and note occasional inconsistency in food quality. Service is generally good, though a few reviews mention areas for improvement.

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hugo in Mexico City provided an unforgettable dining experience! I went with six great friends, and we chose to sit outside, which was absolutely perfect. The ambiance, lighting, and weather all came together to create a magical atmosphere.

We shared a variety of appetizers as a table, and every single dish was exceptional—beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable; the staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and made us feel completely welcome.

It was an amazing night filled with fantastic food, great company, and a setting that was both elegant and relaxed. I highly recommend Hugo for anyone looking for a standout dining experience in Mexico City. Can’t wait to return!"

"Wine Bar Huge nails the balance between playful and refined. The gnocchi Parisienne was the standout, pillowy and rich with the perfect crisp. The tartare was fresh and well-seasoned, a great way to start the meal.

The vibe is sexy and cute with dim lighting and just the right energy for a date night. Service was solid and attentive without being overbearing. The wine list is thoughtful with plenty of fun options by the glass. It’s the kind of place you want to linger. A perfect pick for a romantic evening in CDMX"

"This is a solid wine bar/restaurant but could be better. A bit on the pricey side

Wide selection of bottles- most above 50USD and closer to 100, so expect to pay $$.

It’s a busy place so without a reservation you’ll have to wait, which I did. After I gave them my twinkle smile I was worried they may ask me to leave but I was seated at one of the worst tables.

Carpaccio, olives, pan, their version of schnitzel - was good, especially the schnitzel, add a bottle of wine, the total was 3300 pesos. SO PRICEY. The food was smaller portion size except the schnitzel.

Other than being pricey. They only had one size of wine glass, which was disappointing. (I did ask for additional glass of red wine, and they poured it in which appeared to be a baby size wine glass. Their payback, I guess)

For being a wine bar, have AT LEAST two glass sizes. A white and a red. It’s a successful restaurant, so they should spend a little money on stemware. Is that asking too much…maybe.

I also asked them to decant the wine, which they (he) didn’t want to do and really didn’t quite understand why I wanted to do it.

All-in-all, I will go back bit try to sit in the bar area where there is a better vibe which I can bring down. Next to the coffee/ espresso machine wasn’t a highlight.

A few decent pics below. That’s all for now."

Where To Eat The Famous Fish & Other Iconic Dishes In Mexico City - Mexico City

Hugo El Wine Bar in Roma is run by two New York transplants, and tables here are usually full of people wearing Adidas and talking about how remote work really changed everything. For the best chance of a table, swing by during those few hours between lunch and dinner, when it becomes clear that if you don’t keep going you will just fall asleep. Hugo’s wine list is largely natural bottles from Mexico’s wine region, so it’ll almost feel like you’re at your local wine bar, except you’ll probably feel happier, and more on vacation.

36 Best Restaurants in Mexico City for Birria, Ceviche, Tacos, and More

Hugo is a wine bar by Isabel Castillo and Thierry Chouquet, in the trendiest nodule of Condesa. Michael Crespo, their American-Filipino chef cut his teeth in the kitchens of NYC and that style of minimal, small-plate, good ingredient cookery is a large part of the charm of this restaurant (even though you'll be paying NYC prices). His deeply caramelized, border-line burnt Basque cheesecake is known about town.

How Mexico City Is Becoming the World’s New Cocktail Capital

With world class cocktail bars sprouting up all over Mexico City, doors also open for more niche imbibing concepts—adding more nuanced color to an already vibrant scene. Natural wine bars, for instance, are all the rage in Mexico City right now. Loup Bar (below Maison Artemisia), Hugo, NIV, and PLONK are just a few of the hottest natty pours in the city for happy hour or date night, while the later night crowds are flocking to listening bars—or "music rooms"—which have gained popularity in CDMX over the past decade.

A Guide to Mexico City’s Natural Wine Scene

At the time, there was neither a market for natural wine in Mexico City nor a place to sell it—so Téllez then opened Amaya in 2016, the first restaurant of its kind to feature a natural-only wine list. After Maldonado took over the distribution of Bichi, the two quickly set about realizing their shared vision for Mexico City to become a natural wine haven. When Noma came to Tulum for a six-week pop-up in April and May of 2017, Bichi was the only Mexican wine Rene Redzepi served.

The Best Restaurants In Mexico City

Hugo feels like a Lower East Side transplant with a Mexican twist, which we guess is what happens when two former New York residents relocate here and open a place. Their wines, of course, are a highlight—they’re mostly natural, and many of them come from Mexico’s wine region in Valle de Guadalupe. Food-wise they keep it simple, with small plates of things like kampachi crudo and fennel with fava beans (though they also make a fantastic roasted chicken).
