The oldest portions of this 16th-century mansion were built using stones torn down from the Templo Mayor, which lies just feet away. At lunchtime, you may want to reserve a table on the atmospheric second-floor terrace overlooking the Zócalo, cathedral, and national palace, or simply stop at the ground floor patio for a drink in the shade of the towering cathedral across the street. The frieze on the façade of this former 17th century colonial abode features a Caravaca cross flanked by a pair of mermaids, which gives the restaurant its name, the House of the Mermaids. We ate a delicious lunch on the rooftop terrace with a spectacular view overlooking the extremely disappointing Templo Mayor and the back of the impressive Catedral Metropolitana, while an organ grinder played a whimsical tune over and over from the street below. A stylish and posh Mexican restaurant, La Casa de las Sirenas, lying in the vicinity of Templo Mayor Museum is another good rooftop bar with an amazing view overlooking the district’s cathedral. It is a restaurant with an extensive menu, serving a variety of delicious drinks, flavourful food, and spirits. The staff is very amicable and upon prior booking, you can even ask for special arrangements to be done.

La Casa de Las Sirenas was initially on my “maybe, if we have time” list, but I’m so glad it became part of our official itinerary. We lucked out with an amazing high table during lunch on the balcony, even without having reservations. On the other side of the zocalo, the rooftop terrace of this adorable restaurant has views of Catedral Metropolitana and Templo Mayor.
