Reviews Summary

La Docena is lauded for its incredibly fresh seafood, especially oysters, and vibrant atmosphere. Diners praise the attentive service and delicious, bold flavors. However, some reviewers note that cocktails can be watered down, and a few have experienced issues with payment terminals or perceived rushing by staff.

"Had a great experience. Started off with an expresso martini as I haven't had a really good one in Mexico City and really enjoyed it (had 2). We had a spicy seafood soup (video) and some calamari to start out with. I got the shrimp po boy and my husband got the fish and chips. We were both pleased and will be back next time we are in CDMX."

"Been coming to la docena for years (originally in GDL, country club) been all the locations and usually it was a fair price and extremely happy staff eager to make your food dreams and desires come true. Today. felt different. I felt rushed to eat, several times trying to take plates and drinks before finished. And when going to pay, the red terminal machine wasn’t working. Yes i have USA cards but used them dozens of times this week. Plenty of available balance. I asked for different machine to which the staff was insulting to tell me was my card. Used 3 different visa/mastercard and finally when they bring different terminal it worked instantly.

I don’t spend $150 for lunch to be insulted by staff about a credit card not working when it’s their machine.

Can find many other places for overpriced lunch while in Mexico. Food is nothing like it was 5 years ago :(

Update. Went to another restaurant using red terminal and worked fine…"

"Overall a great experience. Worth a visit. Situated at chic Alvaro Obregón avenue. The restaurant is trendy with a great layout. The food was delicious and the service was good. It was a tad pricey. The bill was hefty. You can sit inside or outside. Recommended."

The best tacos in Mexico City

This time, however, Lastra whisks us to La Docena, an oyster and fresh seafood bar in the fashionable Roma district, where the meal kicks off with their signature grilled octopus tostada dressed with pineapple, raw onion, chilli, guacamole and coriander. It is followed by another local delicacy Lastra is keen for us to try, tacos de escamoles, whose key ingredient are rice-like grains that turn out to be ant larvae, otherwise known as Mexican caviar. A trip to the Mercado de San Juan (a traditional food market in the Cuauhtémoc district) brings more challenging varieties in the form of lion, tiger, crocodile and tarantula meat tacos, all apparently just for the tourists.

La Docena (The Dozen) is an oyster bar and grill, from Chef Tomás Bermúdez of Guadalajara, serving grilled seafood, po'boys, shellfish, Spanish ham and Angus-beef burgers, drawing a lot of locals and celebrities. This is my new favorite, casual restaurant in Mexico City; you'll swear you're in New Orleans. I sat at the outside bar and watched one of the chefs shucking oysters all afternoon.
