Reviews Summary

La Teca is praised for its incredibly authentic Oaxacan flavors, particularly dishes from the Isthmus region. Diners rave about the rich moles, flavorful garnachas, and generous portions, often describing the food as deeply satisfying and homestyle. While the location is slightly off the beaten path, the welcoming service and charming outdoor courtyard enhance the overall comforting and memorable dining experience.

"LaTeca offers incredibly authentic Oaxacan flavors. The mole rojo is absolutely amazing—rich, complex, and full of depth. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked, juicy, and came in a generous portion.

While it’s just outside the main neighborhood, it’s only a short, inexpensive cab ride or a pleasant walk, making it well worth the visit. A hidden gem for anyone craving real Oaxacan cuisine."

"Went here cause I saw from a tt that apparently the tamale was the best he tried. I ordered almost the same things that he mentioned and I was kind of disappointed. For starters was ordered the garnachas with the bolitas the queso. They were ok if I’m honest the sauce that they use is similar to chipotle so is was new to me. To my surprise I only received one bolita de queso, mind you it’s around the size of a rubber ball. I the ordered the stuffed plantain and again it was underwhelming. Next I ordered the elote tamal and I will say it was the best thing I had there but definitely not for those in search of something savory. The agua de tamarindo was very delicious I will say. Beautiful place and good customer service but overall I don’t recommend since it’s a little on the pricer side. Unless you are in search for very unique flavors"

Daira Trevino

"Best dinner we had in Oaxaca, we got the cheese balls, the garnachas, the stuffed pepper and the mole Amarillo, food came to our table Pipping hot, service was excellent. For dessert we got the fried bananas. Perfect ending for a great meal."

The 23 Best Restaurants In Oaxaca - Oaxaca

La Teca has been around for over 30 years under the dedicated care of Deyanira Aquino Pineda (also known as La Teca), and the reason is simple: They’re pumping out traditional dishes from el Istmo de Tehuantepec, a narrow region between Oaxaca and Veracruz, that are as rich as they are hefty. Hone in on the garnachas, fried corn disks topped with shredded meat, and pickled cabbage that cut through the rich flavors. Or the molotes de plátano, soft and fluffy plantain croquettes accompanied by sour cream and creamy-salty costeño cheese.

Oaxaca City is full of great options for “valley style” cuisine, but for under-the-radar flavors that highlight the diversity of food around the state, particularly from the south east region of Tehuantepec, head to La Teca, a small restaurant situated inside the owner’s house. Dishes combine sweet and sour flavors and show off tropical ingredients like plantains with dry cheese and sour cream. There’s an exuberant ceremonial mole, corn cake, the most delicious baked mashed potatoes and amazing bite size garnachas (fried tortillas topped with stewed meat).

Mole y Más: Tasting History in Oaxaca City

Recipes from the distant Isthmus of Tehuantepec vary from those native to Oaxaca City in many ways—and this restaurant is one of the few places in the city itself to find them. There’s no better representation of the cuisine’s penchant for dairy than a dish of sweet griddled plantains bathed in cream and buried in powdery cheese. The estofado, brisket in tomato-based sauce flavored with raisins and sesame, is also worth a visit to the homey restaurant.

La Teca a small, family-owned restaurant featuring cuisine from Istmo, one of the eight regions in Oaxaca, is a down-to-earth, no frills place to eat lunch or dinner. It’s about as close as you can get to having dinner at abuela’s. Of all the places we tried on the list, La Teca was hands down our favorite restaurant for its garnachas, platanos fritos, rich mole sauces, and welcoming staff.
