And if we are about to take a culinary tour of Mexico, you will find Amate 38 right opposite from it, which serves very tasty Yucatecan food. From there, we continue to Oaxaca with the flavors of La Perla Pixan Cuisine & Mezcal Store (my favorite restaurant), which now combines meat dishes with La Carbonería. Right next to it is Trujillo’s Cantina de Selva, another excellent Mexican option, but more chic.

Breakfast was an absolute delight at the very popular Amate 38, across the street from the equally inviting La Cueva del Chango, both bistros set in a rainforest-like garden, and with the same owner. Specializing in Yucatecan cuisine, the same woman has made corn tortillas for La Cueva for years. My Amate Omelet was a creative, tongue-rewarding world away from the “Mexican” breakfasts served in the U.S.

The chaya, and plantain tacos, a wonderful vegan option, are served with a sikil pa’k sauce.

Amate 38 is a Playa del Carmen restaurant that specializes in dishes from around the Yucatan Peninsula. The chochinita pibil is my favorite, but you can’t go wrong with anything here. Their homemade salsa is also probably my favorite in all of Playa.

At Amate 38 you can eat under the tropical shade of Yucatan trees and be close to the beach. If you’re wondering what to order, the empanadas here are amazing!. Just keep in mind that they only accept cash.
