One of my favorites restaurants in Puebla is El Mural de los Poblanos, a beautiful place with walls covered all over with murals. As the hotel kitchen closed early, it being a Sunday they suggested Mural de los Poblanos located on the other end of Zocalo, a 10 min walk. As soon as we stepped out we were pleasantly surprised with all the decorations and color full street lighting done for the independence day. The cathedral was also lit up for the special occasion with people enjoying the evening with street food and street music.

20 minutes outside of the city center is the neighborhood of Cholula—Puebla’s closest answer to Williamsburg, or Barranco, or Monti, and the oldest city in Latin America. We had the chance to visit Restaurant El Mural de Los Poblanos to try a Nopal salad, which turned out to be cactus. It is a little slimy like okra, but wonderful to the bite as a salad served with black sesame and rice nachos. I thought those were friendly green peppers in my salad, but was pleasantly surprised to have cactus in my meal.

Not because it made it to this list, but because it’s so low!. By many accounts, El Mural de los Poblanos isn’t just one of the best restaurants in Puebla, it IS the best. And while I do agree with that sentiment, I prefer places that serve comfort food over upscale restaurants which is why El Mural isn’t higher on this list.
