Lilac walls daubed with Day of the Dead skulls, globe lights hanging from the pallet-wood ceiling, live bands playing on the mezzanine and a young, alternative crowd: La Lupita is always lively, any night of the week. What’s more, it serves some of the best tacos in town – best washed down with craft beers, mezcals or tequilas from an impressive drinks list. Pourings come in traditional jicaras – hollowed-out gourds that hold plenty more than your average shot glass.

Chef Thomas Keller counts himself among La Lupita’s many devoted fans. The secret to the lively joint’s addictive tacos: made-from-scratch tortillas. La Lupita uses Mazahua corn, grown more than 8,200 feet above sea level, and nixtamalizes (a process where the corn is soaked, cooked, washed, and hulled) and grinds it in-house, then slaps it into sizzling warm tortillas.

We love the selection and laid-back ambiance of Tacos Gardenias in Cabo San Lucas (the salsas are incredible) and the modern twists on traditional offerings at La Lupita in San José del Cabo.

Taco prices range from very cheap (about 50 cents) to relatively expensive ($5 or more) in Los Cabos, with rarely much difference in quality. La Lupita is the exception, and the foremost mecca in Los Cabos for dyed-in-the-wool taco aficionados. Located in the midst of San José del Cabo historic Distrito del Arte, crowds spill out the door waiting for a chance to try gourmet delicacies like the Taste of Lupita with blue chips, pumpkin seed and tomato dip, guacamole and fresh lime and chile roasted chapulines (grasshoppers), as well as tacos featuring pato (duck), cecina (cured, thinly sliced beef), suckling pig or barbacoa (lamb or beef cooked in a pit covered with maguey leaves).

Located in San Jose del Cabo’s buzzing Old Town, La Lupita will give you a taste of the real Mexico. While the inside of the restaurant is nice, you’ll want to head out to the back courtyard for peak holiday vibes with colourful bunting, rustic wood tables, a lively bar and, come sundown, a band playing traditional tunes on the rooftop (yes, really). These guys are the top dogs of the taco world, serving up every kind of classic and modern twist you can think of.

This place came highly recommended for great food and super fun atmosphere with a live band—definitely need reservations and the first thing they asked was if anyone had any allergies which was great—I was surprised to see a few items with peanuts at a taco place. It’s VERY LOUD so I felt it was a bit challenging to make sure all was okay—all was safe but it’s fast paced and loud. My daughter safely had guacamole and a cheese dip and 2 tacos.

You can’t make everyone happy, but you can order tacos, which is basically the same thing (assuming you order them from La Lupita Taco & Mezcal). La Lupita keeps it short, sweet, and to the point, focusing primarily on tacos. And they’ve got tacos for everyone, from the classic Santo Pastor (marinated pork, cilantro, onion, pineapple, yellow corn) to the more adventurous El Takeshi (ribeye, sesame, hoisin, ginger, chives, crispy shallots).

Located in the heart of San José del Cabo’s Art District, La Lupita is a regular stop for award-winning chef Thomas Keller of Napa Valley’s French Laundry whenever he visits Los Cabos. Beyond the vast variety of tacos to choose from, visitors can also sample ceviches, cacti, and other authentic Mexican street food. Guests have two chances to experience La Lupita, with a second location in San Lucas.

La Lupita is a Cabo institution, and arguable serves some of the best tacos we’ve EVER had. Their tacos are eclectic and exciting: duck mole, miso fish, cheese crust al-pastor, IPA beer marinated barbacoa. We came here not once, but THREE times during our trip because we were blown away by the quality of the ingredients, the inventiveness of the flavors, and the affordable price point.

You’ll want to spend some time looking and trying on the jewels, so don’t forget to keep yourself fed as you pass by two of our favorite eateries that have live music playing, La Osteria or La Lupita. It may be late, but you can still have snacks and drinks in their outdoor courtyard as you enjoy the festivities and weigh in on the art seen all afternoon and evening long.

For tacos and mescal, local hipsters and chic travelers flock to La Lupita (Calle José Maria Morelos, tel. 624/688-3926, 2pm-midnight Tues., 2pm-2am Wed.-Sat., noon-midnight Sun., tacos US$2-4). The exposed brick, whitewashed walls, wood pallet furniture, and minimal decor create a Zen-like atmosphere. The wide variety of tacos includes rib eye, lamb, octopus, and nopal.

Located in San José del Cabo on a brightly decorated, flag-lined street is our favorite Mezcaleria: La Lupita. This place is slinging beefed-up street tacos on tortillas made in-house with live music and lots (and lots) of mezcal. We dare you to try A Taste of La Lupita to start—which includes fried grasshoppers—and don’t miss out on the esquites (street corn cup).

Finally, we’re rounding out our list of the best bars in Los Cabos with another legendary location, La Lupita Taco & Mezcal. It’s hard to pass by this bar thanks to its fabulous food menu and prime location in the heart of downtown San Jose del Cabo’s art district. The patio feels like a backyard party, and the taco-focused menu pairs excellently with draft beers.

Ramiro García, for example, has likely been making the best suadero tacos in town since 2003, but I’ve only confirmed it since his Tacos Ramiro’s moved a few years ago to its current location on Calle 16 de Septiembre, a block and a half from Cerrito del Timbre. I typically order them with a side of tuétano — bone marrow served in a bone — a magical combination.

La Lupita Taco & Mezcal is by far the most upscale taco restaurant on this list. It’s more like a fancy restaurant, and less like a Mexican-style taco joint, but it is really popular so I wanted to include it. Their restaurant space is funky, with attentive service, great cocktails and often live music.

Closed on Monday nights, the only time you won’t see the restaurant packed with locals tucking into the extensive list of tacos. Drift Hotel’s exclusive domain is open to the public on Thursdays and Saturdays when a food truck can be found puffing away to service the small selection of delicious bites.
