Moose-AKa’s is an Eastern European restaurant & tavern that serves traditional Serbian family recipes made from scratch daily. Menu items include moussaka, fried crepes, stuffed peppers (including a vegan option!), schnitzel, and more. Desserts items include a Serbian-style cheesecake, as well as “Grandmother’s chocolate cake” which has an interesting combination of homemade chocolate cake made with coconut cream and oat milk, layers of crushed Brazil nuts, pureed dates, and peanut butter, and a topping of chocolate, almonds, and roasted coffee beans.

In writing these lists of where to eat in various parts of Alaska, I always find it easy to come up with one place I recommend to literally anyone and everyone. I call this the “Best in Show” restaurant since my experience there was so good that I can’t imagine anyone having a bad experience. In Denali, that place is Moose-AKa’s, a restaurant I was genuinely uncertain about and almost skipped.

Moose-Aka’s opened as a food truck in 2015, and the food quickly became a local and worldwide favorite, allowing the owners to launch a full-scale restaurant a few years later. They serve delicious Serbian food in an atmosphere that is fundamentally different from most restaurants in America. They create a leisurely dining experience that leaves you free to stay for as long as you want.

Next time I would also try Moose-AKa’s, which is one of the top restaurants in the area. Also, consider skipping the recommendation to purchase a box lunch for the Tundra Wilderness Tour and just grab some food at one of the local restaurants after the tour. The snacks that were provided on the bus were enough to tide us over, or you can bring your own snacks to eat on the bus.

It was close to 6PM when we were finally out of the park and decided to eat at Moose-Aka’s, which was boarded up to our disappointment. So, we went back to Healy and ate at the same place as the night before, 49th State Brewing Co, and crashed for the night.
