Tucked away along the skala, this chic restaurant is a real treat, offering a daily changing menu—prepared in an open kitchen—that blends seasonal and local ingredients with French savoir faire. The airy restaurant draws in a clientele of expats and tourists with its muted dove grays, glossy white furniture, and quirky art touches, such as a gorgeous Gnaoua mural. Be sure to try the goat cheese from a women's co-op in nearby Meskala; you also can't miss the chocolate fondant with salted caramel ice cream.

Perhaps one of the best restaurants in Essaouira, Ottolenghi-inspired UMIA serves up fresh dishes and innovative cuisine. The duck pastilla provides an interesting take on a traditional Fassi dish, while the lotte served over steamed vegetables is a healthy option. Be sure to save room for dessert, as the chocolate pudding with salted caramel sauce is quite simply divine!

My favorite place to sip this wine is at Umia, an upscale and romantic restaurant adjacent to the ramparts, with dim purple lighting and groovy tulip chairs. Alternatively, join the bevy of German, Norwegian, and British expats at Silvestro’s Italian restaurant and wash down your margarita pizza with Val d’Argan’s Rhône-varietal rosé.

Two of the city’s best restaurants – Umia for steamed clams and beef wellington; Triskala for vegan dishes – are less than a minute away and the riddle of souks that define the medina are just behind.

Umia is sleek contemporary, and intimate, with excellent flavourful and beautifully presented Mediterranean food, is not to be missed. If they have in on the menu the steamed clams, and razor clams, scallops, and Blue Lobster ravioli, are all electable, as is the Fig salad and burrata, grilled watermelon and feta, quid carpaccio, monkfish, swordfish, and the delicious Beef Wellington tenderloin, and delectable lemon pie, all of it!. Cocktails, and a great wines.

This sleek modern restaurant is well-located inside the Medina right near the city walls. It is a chic, high-end eatery where you can dine at modern wooden tables filled with giant wooden candle holders. The modern chairs are well-complimented by beige walls with white shelves that house a variety of plants, adding an air of sophistication and opulence to this restaurant in Essaouira that just makes you feel fancy.

If that's not an option because it'd be weird to get food delivery in your royal suite at L'Heure Bleue (you're overpaying but hey, when in Maroc...), then go to Taros for Oulidia oysters - they are big, fatty ones. I'd say just fill up on oysters for dinner. But if you need more sustenance, go to Umia for a full dinner after a round of the oysters.

Then along came lunch at UMIA, hands down one of the best restaurants in Essaouira and deserving of a Michelin star according to some of my friends. Duck pastilla, calamari, carpaccio and fresh salads were just what we needed as we recalled the previous nights’ events before digging in to a mouth-water desert.

The hosts are incredibly nice and the standard of food is high. You will need reservations and when you’re a vegetarian or vegan, make sure to mention this in advance as the options are a bit limited. Excellent fish and meat options and you can even pre-oder if you would like something super special.

Umia is the ideal option for vegetarians because they provide a large selection of vegan cuisine. It offers scallops, monkfish, and beef in Wellington, in addition to being vegetarian. You can quickly get to the restaurant even during rush hour because of its excellent location.

If we were kid free for a night, this is where I would have booked. I’m something of a food snob and the menu at Umia just seemed to catch my eye every time I walked past. On many a night, as we walked by, I would hang back staring through the window… probably drooling.

This small and family-run establishment has a modern ambiance to it. The staff members are all attentive to each customer’s needs, providing excellent customer service. The rates of the dishes are all worth it as the ingredients are all fresh.

When it’s too dark for sightseeing, follow the ramparts round to Umia, a French-Moroccan joint serving filet de boeuf Wellington (mains from £15; 22 Bis Skala Street). Now you’re ready to rock the kasbah. Pick a roof terrace: Salut Maroc!.

Surprisingly, one of the best restaurants in Essaouira is such a well kept secret. Umia is easy to miss, but it would be a pity if you did, considering the food is simply divine. It’s far from Moroccan, but it’s fine dining at its best.

When you tire of tagine, book a table at Umia, an unpretentious restaurant in a stone townhouse close to the ocean serving delicious Mediterranean and seafood dishes — try the razor clams (mains from £11; 22 Rue Skala).
