Pepe Nero offers up a reliable Italian a stone’s throw from where most of the action in Marrakech happens. With tables clustered under orange trees in a tile-lined courtyard that boasts a beautiful water feature at its heart, you don’t get much more atmospheric than this.

While the Italian Il Bel Paese side to the menu comprises a selection of homemade pasta dishes and risotto, the Moroccan La Ville Rouge offering encompasses classic plates such as slow roasted shoulder of lamb and a selection of tagines.

An Italian – Moroccan hybrid isn’t necessarily what you’d expect to find, but because of the mediterranean influences on Moroccan cuisine it really works. Pepe Nero have got a Moroccan and Italian menu, so you can mix and match from both, which we did – I enjoyed and Italian starter and dessert and a tasty chicken tagine for main course. My whole family completely raved about the chocolate pudding, but for me the real standout was the restaurant itself.

Pepe Nero is actually an Italian restaurant in Marrakech – a good choice if you’re getting tired of the daily tagines. I didn’t eat here myself but it comes recommended as having gluten free items marked on the menu. I have read some questionable reviews, though, mentioning that not all of these dishes are actually gluten free.

Located in a sumptuous and elegant riad, Pepe Nero is head and shoulders above the other (many) Italian restaurants in Marrakech. The restaurant, in fact offers two menus, one Moroccan, the other Italian.

This is one of our favourite places, hidden in the south of the medina. It’s a converted Riad serving both Moroccan and international food. It’s light, airy and skilfully designed.
