Reviews Summary

The Strand Cafe offers a charming colonial ambiance and is highly recommended for its high tea experience with beautiful presentations. While some dishes receive mixed reviews, the 2-course lunch sets are noted for their quality and value. Service can be inconsistent, with some patrons finding staff attentive and others feeling overlooked.

"The Strand celebrated Centennial last 2001. Established 1901, it is contemporary to Singapore's Raffles Hotel. A must in Rangoon now known as Yangon."

"We went to the cafe for high tea. The cafe wasn't busy and we were seated right away. We didn't have reservations. The cafe is beautiful and styled more European than Burmese. We tried the Myanmar style high tea instead of the typical high tea. It's more expensive than a traditional meal for Myanmar. This costs us $18 each. The food itself was interesting to try and they accommodated a vegetarian diet. It was disappointing they only provided us with one type of tea. Many other high tea places I have tried lets you try multiple teas. The wifi worked well and the facilities were clean and modern. They accept credit cards as a form of payment.

This was a lovely way to spend an afternoon out of the hot sun in Yangon."

"They call it a cafe, but it's both a restaurant and cafe. Or at least, I'm not aware of there being any other restaurant on-site.

Anyway, I've had lunch here several times and have never been disappointed. The 2 and 3 course lunch set costs US$12 and US$19 (payable in Kyat) respectively. It's a bit steep to pay US$7 to go for an extra course so I always go for the 2-course lunch. A main (entree) and your choice of the starter or dessert is on offer. Water and plenty of bread with butter are served complimentary, but other drinks are extra.

Service is quite attentive but not too intrusive. They take your order and once the food comes, it's delightful. Whether you choose a local or western option, the quality is superb as you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. Surprisingly, the prices are not too bad considering it's a 5-star hotel.

Definitely a place I will visit again on my next business trip."

YANGON: ITS HISTORY, CHARMS AND SAVING ITS COLONIAL BUILDINGS

Paul Theroux wrote in “The Great Railway Bazaar”: “ The decrepitude of the buildings in Rangoon is almost grand. The surfaces are shabby, but the shapes are extravagant, and the workmanship is obvious (Corinthian columns support one veranda; another, very graceful, is of wrought-iron lyres); their dereliction has splendor. Some have spires and others a score of ambitious balconies with pockmarked balusters or flowery balustrades, peeling yellow shutters, and lines of motionless wash hung out to dry—the clotheslines strung from the blossom of a cornice to the studs of that ornate pillar.

Yangon & The Strand

The Strand Yangon opened in 1901, on Strand Road – one of British India’s largest and most prized cities of the time, Rangoon. The 5-star hotel painted in off-white/beige on the exterior looks elegant and it kind of brought me back to those historical days. The hotels Victorian influence is visible from the colonnaded entrance-way; the marble floor inlaid with teak wood, the rattan furniture and potted palms, the chandeliers and black-lacquered ceiling fans.
